Never understood people who went to the opera - well, not entirely true, I could understand if they were Italian or Spanish or spoke the language which was used in it. But, why would anyone go to listen to something they didn't understand?

    Verdi weird.

Have you ever been? Some are great and many have translations above the stage.

    Plus they're musical and beautiful.

Surtitled generally, you wouldn't be able to see subtitles.

Because it's about the beauty of the music for some people, lyrics are only a small part.

I listen to lots of music where I don't understand the lyrics. And like someone else said, opera has the visual experience, too.

heres the difference between you and i. im someone who goes to the operas(ive never actually been but i would love to go). remember that scene in quantum of solace at the opera where he goes around being a spy and kicking ass? james bond is awesome and loves wearing a tux and kicking ass at the opera. thats basically what operas are all about and thats what i would be doing if i went to an opera. saving the world

you on the other hand enjoy watching people like me in the cinema (i bet youve seen quantum of solace) go to the opera and being bad ass saving the world from a new world order like a scrub. you never actually get involved yourrself

You're actually kind of right in a way. About 4 years ago I went to see La Traviata opening night at the LA Opera. It's as much about the "pomp and circumstance" as the opera itself on those nights.
You get in a tux, go down a red carpet and have a champagne reception.

Same thing when you go in Paris.

Sure, not all operas are like that, but the majority people get dressed up and party before and after.

Don't knock it until you try it. I go to a few operas a year at least. It isn't the cheapest option but in terms of live performance there isn't anything to touch it.

It isn't just the beautiful and sweeping music but the emotion portrayed by the singers really sells the message. I've laughed and been moved by opera pieces. The surtitles are there if you want but you certainly don't need to be glued to them to enjoy the performance.

Opera is not really about the lyrics, they're generally not that profound, in my opinion it's about the music and especially the immense singing talent.

Went to see Turandot last year, and was a bit skeptical about the whole thing.
Thoroughly enjoyed it though, great excuse to get dressed up, talk to random strangers, people from all walks of life were at it. :)

Just looks like a boreing pile of sh**e to me but if the tickets were free and came with a choc ice or a strawberry cornetto I'd give it a try

Why do people listen to rap? Same thing.

Btw, an operette is a lighter version. Maybe you'd like that more.
