The poor dealer in this example is only "mar shampla", I am not casting aspersions on them in any way.

In 3 years time (8 yrs old) will this car be sell-able, or a scrap prospect?

OK. I know its a lovely car, great spec etc. But have big petrol engined stuff really died a death in terms of resale above banger territory?

well in so far as you can predict future prices, something like this would guide on its value in 4 years time

I bought a 2005 530i at the start of the summer for €12,900, 38K miles, better spec then that one, and importantly an Auto, very limited market for non M manuals with big petrol engines. (even though this is SMG, it's all the clunkiness of the SMG, without the power of a 500+ Bhp engine to justify the clunkiness IMO, I may be wrong on that one)

If you buy privately and use your noggin you can save a fortune, with private sellers there is always room to negotiate, the garages tend to stick to their guns with only a few hundred to be knocked off.

Big engined cars depreciate like stones in Ireland, but are a much better car to drive than the 520D that are so popular, as long as you get them cheap enough in the first place to offset the increased tax and fuel costs.

SMG's a lot of things, but it's not that clunky. The only disadvantage of SMG is that unlike an Auto, it'll roll back on a hill, but it's a very good gearbox.
