Thinking of attending my first Judo training session tomorrow and wondering what to expect, i.e. what's the run of a class? I've been to TKD classes and did Kickboxing as a kid, so would it be similar with pushups, stretches, etc followed by sparring, or what? I'm sure it varies, just curious.

Also, how good is Judo for fitness? Not a big gym fan

I've never trained with them, sorry.

Maybe some of the college lads who compete in the interversities will give you more info.

It's actually a German jujutsu class today.

Basic rundown for jujutsu would be.

Warm up - jogging etc followed by mobilisation type stuff.

Warm up/footwork stuff - kind of half between a warm up and a technique portion. Everyone spreads out and they work on shadow boxing kind of stuff with a semi set pattern.

Technique - usually some basic technique is demonstrated and then you go practice it for a few minutes with a partner. Then some follow on technique is demonstrated and you do that. By the end you're doing quite a long sequence. Usually involving punches, a take-down and an armlock.

Sparring - can be ground fighting, ground fighting with punches, standing striking, standing wrestling, or full on standing and ground. Depends on space and the skill level of the class.

Pressups and stuff like that till you're wrecked.

    Stretching off.

In judo it usually goes like this

    Jogging, mobility, etc.

    Breakfalls, rolls.

demonstrate a technique + go practice

demonstrate a different technique + go practice

randori - sparring. Usually rounds of either ground fighting or standng wrestling. Very rarely both, due to the space it requires.

    Stretch off.

To start off though, i think both classes will be very similar as they'll be concentrating on getting everyone up to speed on the safety stuff and teaching them to break-fall.
