2009 Notice of Assessment HELP!!

Hi- I know if I looked long and hard enough I could probably find answers to this question but I am in a bit of a panic here.... Just got back Notice of Assessment for 2009 for me and hubby. And I think they have made a mistake... But of course they want payment up front and then will reassess....

I cant find my own Tax Credit Certificate- but my husband has a Personal Tax Credit of 1830 and a PAYE Tax Credit of 1830.... should I have the same?! I am assuming so?! But they have not included mine on the notice of assessment. Hence the panic as I am being charged twice what I expected (husband is in employment so his tax is paid in full, I am self employed and its my first year doing a return).

Clarification would be appreciated as I would love to be armed with info before I call tomorrow... Thanks in advance.

As a self employed person you won't get the PAYE credit. You should however be getting the €1830 Personal Tax credit (assuming that you have some earnings for the year). You might need to check with the tax office if they have you recorded as a married person, as I'd have expected that they would definitely include that credit in the assessment?!

While you're at it, check if you or he has claimed for things such as bin charges, trade union membership, rent credit etc as required. One thing that your husband might also be able to claim is an employee expense allowance, a list of which you'll find in Excel format here- these are available for a reasonably wide list of occupations and they basically reduce your taxable income. A lot of people are not aware of them.

You'll find a list of possible standard credits here.

    Hi

If your husband is Paye worker then tax credit of 1830
If you are self employed, and jointly assessed as married couple, between you, the married personal credit is 3660 (2*1830).
Your husband might not have taken the full married credits, but your entitled to total credits of 5490. Personal credits per your notice of assessment should come to 5490 ( 1830 + 3660). You are not entitled to the paye tax credit of 1830 as you are self employed.

    Does that help?:)

Hi, thanks a mill. I'm self employed part time and a paye worker part time (was full time employed for first 3 months of year and then 1 or 2 days per week as an employee for rest of year) so should I get PAYE credit as well? Or at least a portion of it?

Just looking at notice of assessment, they have actually included personal credits of 3660, but have omitted any PAYE credit for either of us, I assume that's why the amount owing is so high?!

If you are also a PAYE earner you can claim the employee (PAYE) credit (or a portion of it if your PAYE earnings are low ~ c. €9150 for the year).

Your PAYE husband should definitely be getting a employee credit of €1830 for the year.

I earned 15,581 as a paye employee, so should I get full paye credit? Thanks a million by the way, I'm calming down a bit now....

Yep- €15581 in PAYE earnings will give you the PAYE credit.
