    Hello,

Do any of you use any farm software that is currently on the market? If so, Which ones & why do you use it? IE Why does it make your job easier?

I use Herdmaster, it's fine. I use it a lot for the herd and remedies register, and to register calves via email. Also milk recording and breeding - serves, calving dates, etc. It works, is reliable and the support is very good in my experience. I wouldn't want to run the farm without some farm database.

Is there anything missing from these software packages that you think you would find helpful?

The reason I ask is because I am looking into possibilities for a project at university...

ideal package would record serves, calvings etc, alert you when to dry off cows, and cows due for calving within a two week period maybe, be able to pick out a cow and see all recorded data, maybe be able to link up with milk recording data if that is possible??? Problem with icbf in my view is that you cant type in a cow and see everything about the cow i.e. as far as i know if you record a dry off for her you cant see that data again so whats the point? Just my opinion and some of them things may not be achievable, also a few calculations for estimating tonnes of maize in a pit etc things that make life easier is what counts

    Thanks for the feedback.

What about from a supply chain perspective? Like, farmers need to buy feedstuff for their stock, their output is then usually an animal for meat or the milk from that animal; Is there any software out there that deals with this? Or is there any need for such software?

wouldnt see the point really, only relevance in my view would be for the bord bia insepection where you must just tick a box as to what you fed the animals for the year e.g. maize whole crop etc and batch numbers and quantities of feed bought in e.g. nuts. but its easier to just fill in the book than fill in the computer and book

ifc and kings wood both have very similar programs, and cover all most every thing you can think of, id very much douth that there is a farmer out there that can say they use every aspect of their program. personally id probally only use 50 - 60% of the programs aballity.
both co's are at it a long time and update 3-4 times a year, not much they havent thought of.
use ifc at the moment, but still remember using the dos version of kingswood:o

Hi inchicore dude, you know the way shopkeepers years ago used to keep two sets of books, one offical one for the taxman, and another set for themselves about what really was going on?

Well thats the kind of software we need. One offical 'perfect' set of records for bord bia or whatever gob****e that comes in the gate to do an inspection, and another set of records that tells us simply wtf is goin on.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Anyone know the cost of the kingswood dairy and accounts software? I believe there is a one off charge for the software and an annual subscription. Is this right?
