Just wanted to say I’ve learned a lot about self defence and self development from the martial artist Geoff Thompson his website http://www.geoffthompson.com has good free articles and podcasts on both. He’s written a lot on the pre emptive strike for protection and fear in and out of dangerous situations. Was wondering about other people views on him.

Geoff seems an odd but very interesting character.

I think from reading some of his stuff he basically started off a bit of a coward (hope he doesn't read this). Started doing Matial arts to test himself. He then became a bit of a thug when doing the door and is now an enlightened one.

I think he is a well rounded martial artist and decent guy now. His "Mind my back" is a fun read but somewhat ironic.

I'd like to meet the guy and talk to him and train with him. I think you/I would learn quite a lot.

I like his stuff. I bought some of his videos and watch his YouTube posts. He certainly knows what he's talking about.

Geoff Thompson is a very impressive guy - read couple of his self defence books - The Fence and 3 second fighter. Its good to read about martial arts(Self DEfence) from a real world perspective.

Check out his Animal Day DVD - its basically a day he does where fighters from different disciplines spar in a gym full contact for the day , it really shows differences between the various martial arts in full contact (they wear gloves but dont pull their punches)

There is a self defence school in Dublin North - HardTarget - some of the instructors have trained with Geoff and they run self defence classes which do incorporate his techniques.

I do train with these guys so am biased but have to say the training is top notch I have done a bit of Krav Maga but the HardTArget stuff takes it up in the reality stakes. The nearest you will get to GT training in Ireland .

Heres a vid of students pressure testing defences against instructor in the FIST suit -

It's not the nearest or only place that teaches reality based material mate, there are plenty. Apart from our own set up under Lee Morrison there's John Brawn under Den Martin in the west and Impact in the south east under Tony Blaur. You'll enjoy what Aidan teaches there but no point in claiming its the only place with an emphasis on reality.

Geoff never claimed to have owned any techniques, his favourite being the punch to the jaw in a pre-emptive fashion, I think what you mean is Geoff's concepts. Hitting to the head has been around since the neandarthals. ;)

I've always liked Geoff's stuff - he definitely knows what he's talking about. But I think Combatives has always been the next level, for me anyway.

    To name a few.

    Lee Morrison (obviously). :D
    Kelly McCann
    Carl Cestari (RIP)
Richard Dimitri (not combatives but on the same page).
W.E. Fairbairn (this guy was doing it back in WW II! and even before that in Shanghai).
    Den Martin (as Jon mentioned).

This type of material has been around for a very long time (as Jon has already said).... :)

I've always thought of Geoff's material as the soft skills and Lee's as the hard skills, and together they make a great system, not that Geoff doesn't teach some great hard skills, I just prefer Lee's stuff. I also really like Peter Consterdine's material.

I didn't really like this clip. I felt that the guy in it willingly got involved in a brawl, which is the last thing you want to happen. I've yet to test out my current ideas about my own self defence (and hopefully I never will), but for me if someone gets that close I'd like to either clinch and sweep or pick him up and dump on the concrete. Or, if I have to strike, it'll be elbows and knees.

    Really? Why not punches?

Sorry, I meant at that range. If I was further out I'd throw punches and kicks alright.

I can't comment on fighting skills, just saw the title of this thread

But I did read Watch My Back and he has several other books also, many on self development.

He wrote and did a cameo in this film

Found them very helpful and he has free articles also.
I'm a fan of the guy

Anyway, this is Self Defence forum and I'm going offtopic :)

When you're talking about Geoff it's really hard just to stick to his self protection training, he's an all round talented guy as you stated.

Lee Morrison choreographed some of the fight scenes in Clubbed BTW they have a close working relationship on similar subjects.
