recommended soda/sand blasting media for paint/rust removal

Looking for some recommendations on sand blasting media and where to buy both the sand blasting media and bicarbonate of soda in large enough quantities.

Have a front nose panel that needs to be completely stripped. Also 4 brake callipers that need the grim and old paint on them removed before being rebuilt/repainted.

Plan is to use soda blasting to remove the paint on both the panel and any loose material on the brake callipers. Then to follow up with some sand blasting on the panel to remove any remaining rust. Brake callipers I'll probably use the soda first to remove any grim and most of the paint, then electrolysis and finally soda blast them a second time to finish cleaning.

So where can I buy bicarbonate of soda in large enough quantities to do this besides the likes of Musgraves? Supermarket size is a bit small even when only doing small jobs.

What size of sand blast media should I be looking for? I only really need it to remove what rust is on the panel. Also besides Caulfields, anyone know of where else supplies blast media around Galway? Shipping this is likely to be expensive so it would be nice to find somewhere local.

    Hi.
I purchased a pot for sandblasting, made a large cabinet.......then tried to buy the media
It's a ridiculous situation in Ireland when one can buy equipment but not the consumables. A guy sells the sand on donedeal for 4 a bag with 25 carriage! or a ton at 4 a bag + 50 delivery......but who wants a ton?
So I have the equipment but no access to the media. My local hardware shop got some in, but a small bag for 25..no way hosay!!
I decided to change over to soda, just a different gun....but same story...where do I get the media? I've contacted 2 companies that do soda-blasting to find out if they sell the media, and cost.....and am waiting a reply. My recommendation is that you give the items to someone that already has the equipment and blasts for a living...it'll be cheaper and less stressfull. It's a bad situation here with buying these consumables.

i agree with ya there...i looked into soda blasting a few years back, got talking to a company in greystones (i think) they wanted stupid money for a machine and then had to buy the soda from them....
there are plenty of people that will blast stuff but make sure you get somebody is is well recommened otherwise it could be costly in the long run for you.....

I have soda blasting media for sale if you want some.

NEVER use soda medium in anything other than a purpose designed soda blasting!

Every Tom, Dick and Harry are doing it now and a lot of them haven't a clue what they're at. I was given a shell recently to restore and the metal distortion was really bad due to the zinc coating having been put on with too much heat. It took me weeks to get it in reasonable condition and I wasn't really happy with the end result either tbh.

tbh, sounds like you should have done more homework before buying the gear.......as for media, we use media and a ton wouldn't last pi$$ing time in a professional outfit - the volumes used are big - a tonne of media isn't as much as you think.

And yes, carriage is a beatch -but that's priced into the job.

You can buy kiln dried sand in patio suppliers. I used that to blast four wheels and had half a bag left. A bag is only a few €€. Use breathing gear though.

How did the wheels work our Dave ? I have 4 CLK wheels to do, lacquer peeling off so I want to take it back smooth before painting silver.

They cleaned up well. They are on a rough 4x4 so I didn't put too much work into the finish.

    Half blasted.
