Movie Extras

I've been browsing through online jobs only to see many adverts for movieextras.ie, they offer jobs saying that pay is up to something like €18 an hour.

Then, just as you've clicked onto their website they say that you have to pay them money.

It's absolutely ridiculous that this crowd is allowed to operate such an obvious scam.

    Opinions?

Its not a scam, its a business. They're an agency, what do you expect?

    How does MovieExtras.ie work?
It is an online directory of artists for the Film & TV Industry. Over 500 production companies and casting directors have sought access to the directory so that they can recruit extras, models, presenters or actors.

We also provide a casting service where we cast and book people on behalf of a production company. Currently we provide all the extras and special extras for Fair City.

What is the feedback from current members?
We undertook an online survey with members, 91% of current members would recommend the service to their family and friends.

What are my chances of getting work?
Firstly you should note that the work is temproary and casual. It may be a month or two before you get a call or it might be the day after you register. It will really depend on what is happening. In the last quarter, we had 5,000 paid days for our members. Currently we work on a ratio of contacting between 3 to 6 people for every person that we need. Some days we might need a 100 people, other days it could be 20.

Apart from our internal casting service, there are on average 100 logins by 40 or so production comapnies every month viewing in excess of 6,000 CV's through our unique directory service.

I am under 16, what are my chances of getting work?
There is not as much work for under 16’s as for over 16’s. If you look at any production, you will see that the majority of extras are over 16. Reasons for this include restricted hours, the requirement for a chaperone and not many under 16's are written into scripts. We do not promote directly to under 16's because of this (but we do need a certain level of under 16's to ensure that any requirement can be met).

    Will I be guaranteed work?
There is no guarantee of work with MovieExtras.ie. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, we do not know what we need for each production that we work with. For example one production may look for Irish people aged from 50 to 60’s or ethnic people while another production may be looking for 18 to 25 year olds.

Generally the decision is with the production company in who they use, thus there are many times when it is out of our direct control. Secondly, we provide a directory service to any production in Ireland, when a production company uses the directory, they will recruit people directly (similar to the Golden Pages). If you have not got work through the service for a while, drop us an email and we can look into it.

Is MovieExtras.ie solely a site for the recruitment of extras?
No, the site can be accessed by production companies to search for artists with any skills, including presenters, actors, VO and models. We have a good success levels in the area of adverts, and small parts for actors. Recently the new presenter for SKY Sports gold show was recruited through MovieExtras.ie. The show is available throughout Europe to over 200 million subscribers.

Their Q&A is 100% straight forward and honest - no promises or gaurantees basically this is what it is, if you like it join it, if not, thanks for looking.

If only every site was as honest.

Maybe actually read the website before calling something a scam?

Being that they're involved in nearly every major movie and tv show filmed here, you may want to be able to back up your claims instead of going into Joe Duffy mode because you cant read something properly.

depends, sometimes it can be the day before its its just a small part or stand in or something, be ready to drop plans if you do get called a lot, I would, great little side earner if you get regular work out of it, friend of mine does it occasionally.

I don't understand how Movie Extras is allowed to charge, surely the "EMPLOYMENT AGENCY ACT, 1971" Section 7 makes it illegal?
    (2) A person carrying on the business of an employment agency shall not charge any fee solely for agreeing to seek employment for another person or solely for agreeing to seek persons who will give or accept employment.

well, i have to say my oh gets offered at least 3 gigs a week with movie extra's between 80 - 100 a day

we are just gutted he only signed up 2 weeks before he got a job after been unemployed for 9 months.

i am from bray and everyone works with movie extras especially at the moment as they are filming camalot.

at the end of the day, hundred euros a year is nothing if you are working all the time.

its great fun and experience too

I wonder if I can profit from my apparent likeness to Simon Cowell.

Movies extras are a shower of......

I did two auditions for extra work in 2004.

and after that I think it was 2005

Movies extras came on the scene and started charging people to do extra work which isn't right at all.

No country in the world charges a person for extra work every years.

I presume they're working under technicalities. either not referring to themselves as an agency under the terms of the act, or the charge is for the portfolio or head shots or something. Most of these laws are easily side stepped.

would worry though, they make it quite clear how it works. If people don't like that, they dont join.

But the whole point is that before they came on the scene there was no charge they rang you up.

You showed up got free food did you day and went home.

ive heard some stories from movie extras extras.

And sometime they dont get calls for months.

You've said the same thing in several different threads. No need to bump each thread with the same stuff.
