Chain Gangs

Having a chat in the pub over the weekend and this subject was brought up.
Discussion came up because of a fella we know of, he assaulted four 13-14 yr old teenagers, punched them all a few times, robbed them of phones and what little money they had in an estate close to their homes. He was caught by the cops and went to court, he had outstanding bench warrant for his arrest for peddalling a forged €50 note and driving offences. He got 5 months. Went to Mountjoy and got sent home due to overcrowding, all he has to do is sign each afternoon in local garda station. He knew that he would do F all of that time,
would 5 months cleaning out ditches and picking nappies and jonnies off beaches as part of a chain gang be a better sentence?
Do you think that it would be more of a deterrant for people like that?
    Your thoughts please.

Yes! I agree, I think that it could curb a lot of anti-social behaviour.

I read something in a freesheet there recently that they are considering using young offenders to tidy up litter around the Castleknock area. Does anyone know anything more about that?

Putting him back on a chain-gang would clearly only work with the benefit of hynde-sight really.

Yes it would be an absolutely superb idea, but this country would never impliment something that makes so much sense. It will never happen because theirs too many people in this country who think people who commit minor crimes don't know any better and come from a bad backround and theirfor should not get a fair punishment.

I even had that song stuck in my head after reading the post and didn't cop it.

Now I have the guitar bit from Cool Hand Luke in there. Stuck on a loop and morphing into the other one :(

Only if they were the type of chain gangs you see in the Western films. Complete with leg irons and old fashioned convict uniforms with the stripes on them

Prisoners should definitely be put to work, it would help repay they're debt to society and it would be good for them. They'd have a daily routine for possibly the first time, gain a work ethic which could mean they'd be more suitable for work when they leave the prison.

How long would it take before council workers start bleating that the crims took their jobs?

I had this awesome image of a gang of guys going around with big, heavy, rusty chains knocking the **** out of scum like the person you described. Then you ruined it with that community service bull****. :(

Fingal County Council cut back on cleaning the beachs in their area this year.

If there ever was a simple task that needs workers this is it.

Council workers can't complain, they had the job and couldn't fund it

If I was in prison I wouldn't mind a few hours walking up and down on the beach early,
    Gets you outside

but think of all those terrible chain gang chanty type songs...totally wouldn't be worth it if you woke up to choruses of 'pick a bale of cotton' etc coming down the street

It would give a valuable boost to the indigenous chain-gang blues genre here.

Hardly. There are stretches of road that haven't been cleaned in decades. I stopped for a pee on the side of a dual carriageway and saw a Tayto bag in the bushes with "15p" written on it.

Except for hipsters who are obsessed with O Brother Where Art Thou? and Johnny Cash and cajun/bluegrass.

I'm doing community service now. When I was in court the judge asked for a Probation Report to make sure I was 'suitable' for community service. I was ****tin'it because there was a chance I could of got prison. Anyway I got x hours community service in lieu of x months in prison.

I've done a good bit of it now and it's not too bad. Most of it has been outside and I've done cleaning up around a canal and did some work at a community centre and some painting and that. So it goes on but most people don't know that it does. You just turn up do what you get told to do and get off home. I know in England that you have to wear a jacket or something saying Community Service but thankfully not here.I remember watching that prog on Ch4 Misfits with them all wearing orange jumpsuits - wouldn't like that!!

Forget about the chains - that's from years ago and isn't going to happen - we're not slaves or anything like that. Some lads doing it take the piss and some don't turn up but that goes back to Probation and they can end up back in court and may get their sentence in prison instead. Most of us just want to get our hours done. Sometimes people come up to us and ask what we're doing and a few ask if we are doing comunity service.

I know some people get to help out with football teams, youth groups, charity shops as well so you don't know just how many are doing it.

I think it's a lot better than putting people in prison and I don't really mind having to do it.
