guys where do ye get insurance for the mods ye have done?? most online sites say you cant have modified your car in any way.. of the 3 that i found online that allow you to select what mods you have done only quinn will quote me. no nonsense and fbd wont quote me.. i know i would be better off calling into a broker but there is not many around here that would even entertain ya... one crowd that my aul chap was with wanted 500 euro to put me as a named driver on his 1.9 206 van!!
wtf is classed as a mod anyway?? if you changed your shocks from a worn factory setup to cheap ones you can get in the motor-factors is this a mod??
if you dont replace your tyres to the exact same ones that came on the car the day it was new dose this count??
so what company's are ye guys with and do they rape ye for the mods ye have done? what way were ye treated when ye added stuff??

maybe the wrong section if so please feel free to move :)

Mods. are underwritten individually, and not online. Too many variables.

Mods. can be pretty much anything non standard/uprated. Simple replacement of tyres wouldn't be a mod. as long as the new ones are the same size and profile.

An uprated stereo is a mod. Makes the car more attractive potentially to a thief. So are fitting alloy wheels in the place of steels.

Many mods. will not warrant an increased premium btw.

    Always disclose if in doubt.

Are you serious that it's also treated as an modification?

So if I'm putting winter tyres which are just one size different, do I have to let my insurer know?

cool. so if i replace something on my car with a part off a higher spec model of the same car is it classed as a mod? take for example if you have a micra with a tape player and you change it to a cd player out of a higher spec micra.

but if you fit alloys that are one size bigger these are classed as a mod!

on tyres.. if your car came with bridgestones from the factory and when the time came you replaced them with say triangles of the same size as these would not be manufacture spec??

If you want to be certain of cover then yes. Always let the insurer decide what's a "material" mod.

    Always document it too.

these shouldnt affect your premium, the recaro seats might if they are big buckets but if they are just normal recaro semi buckets like in a gsr or gti golf i wouldnt even bother tellin them. As for your question about the brand of tyre, no not classed as a mod if you use differant brands.

If you're changing the performance or changing the value of your car, you'll need to tell your insurance company for definite.

All the mods listed so far (bar the tyres and replacing the shocks as per your first post) would fall in this category imho.

    Call your insurance company.

These plus the Recaro seats are almost certainly material modifications.

If it was a different size (wider profile) then yes I would.

If it were a simple new for old in the same size I wouldn't.

lowering springs and shocks are a mod and should be mentioned

    BTW.
I have a set of nice Eibach -30mm springs for my Bravo.
I got them as a present from my friend, who was using them for a last year.
Now he sold his bravo with stock springs, so he didn't need them anymore.

If I fit them myself (i have all necessery equipment), will it be OK with my insurance comapny? Won't they ask for any receipts, etc.?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

    Why don't you ask them?

I'm with Aviva and they haven't charged me for any mods (including remap and coilovers). Are you being quoted so high for another reason such as a low ncb, age, engine power? Have you just bought the car and your looking for your first policy?

im 27. 7 years ful licence 8 year ncb no points no claims ever driving a tdi. i haven't rang any companys to ask them about mods but any that i have found that alloy you to add mods online wont quote me except for quinn and i dont really want to go back to them

I called into my local aviva office a couple of years ago rather than going online or calling their call centre. They added every discount they could for me (big discount for naming my partner on it too, not that she ever gets to drive it), found them very helpful. When I was reporting the mods I called into the office again, no problems at all.

Edit: Just recalled I even reported mods I haven't done yet but plan too over the next year

If you have the policy, you can add the mods on afterwards but it can be risky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

my renewal is coming up soon. just wanted to see what companys ye guys use that are mod friendly!

Unfortunately Quinn were the only ones that would quote me at all!

There's a crowd called The Munster Group that are meant to be quite reasonable, and are mod friendly
