Changing course?

    Hello all.
Does anyone know if it's possible to change to a different course(I'm in first year Arts) without having to drop out and just re apply through the CAO? I have enough points for the other course(I didn't have it down on my CAO). I didn't think it would be possible but heard off a few people in different colleges about being allowed to do it early on if they had space.
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

what course do you want to change to? they might allow it if it's in the same college

I have heard of it happening in the same college before alright. What you need to do is give the Admissions Office of the college with the course you want to do a ring today and they will be able to let you know what the score is. The longer you leave it the less likely it is that you could do it.

Follow up with a phone call by the end of the day if you don't get a reply. Even if they say no you can still try to talk to the faculty head and see what they say. Talk to the head of the faculty that you want to move to as well.

If it's in NUIG, the ladies in the admissions office weren't the most helpful to me when I changed course. I went and asked them about it, they said it can't be done and that I'd have to drop out and reapply the following year.

That sounded crap, so I just went to the course coordinator of the course I wanted to change to, who confirmed they could accomodate me - then I talked to the dean, and all it required then was going back to the admissions office and telling them I had permission to change. They checked with a quick phone call to the secretary of the college of science (was changing to a science course from engineering), and then they re-registered me in all of 2 minutes.

So basically if there's space in the course (provided you've the entry requirements), don't take no for an answer, cause it can take a bit of pestering people...

Thanks for the responses guys. Just checked my email,I had a response within an hour. Said the lady would like to contact me about it and asked if I'd send on my phone number and times she could ring. Looking good,or so I hope :D

    Hello everyone.
I know this is about two years too late, but I'm wondering if it worked out for you Urban Sea? And meeka, who exactly did you contact? Because I'm in first year Science and I'm attempting to move to Arts, but as meeka said the ladies in Admissions didnt know of anything, and the ladies in the arts office won't let me meet with the Dean of arts. So, any advice?

I tried to change my course (within NUIG) after I got my cao offer, the people in the Admissions/Help Office weren't very friendly or polite. I think your only option is to try and get a meeting with someone as high up in either the science or arts departments..

Ya I ran into that problem. Did you manage it? I'm going to try and meet the Dean of Arts on Monday, and if that doesn't work I'll give the Dean of Science a go.

No I haven't pursued the matter any further.. sticking with the original course I was offered. I'm sure if you really make your case about how Science isn't the course for you they will accommodate you... you should talk to some of your science lecturers and see what they say.

Well madam x, I don't know how to answer your question, but I did manage to move from Arts into Science. It just took at lot of pestering! Never accept no for an answer.

Yeah, she could do a post grad in primary teaching. She'd want a really good standard of Irish though

My friend is doing arts with children studies which could lead easily to primary with the hibernia.
She could see if she can transfer to that.

Anyways, a hibernia course is always possible too after general arts.

Hi guys, 2nd year It student here, I'd like to swap to civil engineering. I'd be willing to even go back to first year, I just don't know how to go about it all. Who should I contact/email?

You want to switch out of a course that offers tons of employment and prospects into a course that will most likely see you on the dole upon graduation, unless you emigrate?

There are lots of civil engineers currently doing conversion courses to IT because there are no jobs for them, whereas they'll walk into a job once they do the conversion course.

Not all people are willing to stick out a course that they don't like instead of doing something they do like just because of the job prospects when they finish!

You should arrange a meeting with the head of the IT department and he should be able to advise you on the correct course of action - if he can't, he'll know who you should talk to instead. The student information desk could also help you out, they are friendly in there!
