2 issues with new iMac

I got a new iMac with Snow Leopard at the very end of last year. Late it's been acting up in 2 ways, one of which I discovered last night.

    1) You know the noise a mac makes if you press a key and you get that "thunk" sound ie invalid key, no function. Imagine pressing down a key and you hear that sound on repeat. The Mac turns on randomly from sleep mode, very annoying when asleep and makes this repeated noise. It also happens sometimes while I would be watching something on the Mac (I use VLC for TV shows).

    2) The volume buttons have gone haywire. when I go to lower the volume it turns it up a few notches before it will turn it down, and vice versa with higher volume. The mute button acts funny too.

Anyone ever experienced this or have any ideas what I can do?

FYI - the Mac isn't connected to the internet so I can't see virus being a problem.

I had something similar with my sound, something is funny with my Microphone input which messes with the sound. I was getting a POP sound, and muting and really intermittent sound.

I now have to leave a Headphone jack plugged in and my sound works fine now, can't explain it, I tried everything and finally someone suggested it to me, works for me, hope it works for you too.

Could the keyboard be the problem? Have you another USB keyboard you could test it with?

Have you installed anything recently that might be running in the background and causing problems? Have a look in System Prefs > Accounts > Login Items, and minus off anything that you don't want running or that you are suspicious of.

I just have the one keyboard and it's wireless. I'm hoping if there is a problem that it is just with the keyboard and not the machine, and I can just replace it (hopefully the Apple store wouldn't charge me for this).

disconnect the wireless keyboard and put in a normal standard usb one, and see if theres any different. any usb keyboard will work.

When did you last replace its batteries?
They normally last about 3 months max.
