Either the central locking motor has died, or the locking mechanism needs some greasing if it's too stiff for the motor. Did your car come with central locking as standard? Maybe that's died? If it didnt the motors are not expensive to replace anyway. If you're any way handy with DIY, you could take off the inner door cards and look at the motor and see what it does when you arm the alarm. Actually easier than that, stick your ear up to the door and arm the alarm, you should hear the motor working. If not it's likely dead. If you do hear it, it's the mechanism attached to it at fault.

Thanks will try that later. The alarm didn't come with the car originally so thought this might be the problem.

I can hear the click as if it is trying to lock when i press the button, is this what you mean? Also, the doors should lock after I turn car on, again I can hear the click, bu the locks don't engage.

Right. Sounds like the connection from the motor to the various rods that make up the door lock/unlock mechanism. It could be too, that the motor was a cheap crappy one that barely had enough power to actuate the lock in the first place and over time has just gotten too weak to work. Or it was badly lined up and over time has moved.

Ebay is your friend as far as getting a new one. http://shop.ebay.ie/i.html?_nkw=door+motor+solenoid&_sacat=0&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&_odkw=door+motor&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 Like I say they're not expensive, though I've seen alarm fitters charge 60 quid for one here(not fitted). Paddy tax I suppose.

If you don't fancy having a go yourself, then maybe you know someone handy at that sort of thing? Basically you need to get the door cards off. Usually a straightforward thing to do. You may have an internet forum out there that deals with your car? They're great resources for this kinda thing. When you do get to the mechanism, you'll see its pretty self explanatory how it all works. Arm the alarm and you should see where it's not working/getting blocked. Have a fiddle about and see if you can get it to work. If you do need to replace the motor, check how many wires it has as a connection, then away to ebay with ya :)

As an aside, which door is likely to be the dodgy one? If its a Japanese car, then chances are it's the drivers as the older ones anyway, only came with a motor on the passenger lock. If it never had central locking it could be either side.
