This may well be of interest, and afaik it's being streamed live:
Delivering the Digital Agenda in Ireland and Europe

The EU is launching a "Digital Agenda". This conference will draw on the best expertise to ask a few questions: What are the opportunities and challenges for Ireland in the digital age? How can it help Ireland's recovery, Irish job creation and delivering a smart economy? What about those who risk being left behind: older people, those living in remote areas and the less well-off?

May be a bit of a chance to see what corporate/political Ireland thinks this "smart economy" stuff is supposed to be about...keynote by Eamon Ryan (for those who love to hate him!), ComReg, Eircom, Oracle - even the HSE gets a look in.

    Full schedule is here: http://www.euireland.tv/

Stream seems to be here: http://www.euireland.tv/stream.php

    cordially,
    Scofflaw

Wake me up when i can get reliable multigigabit+multi tier1 carrier bandwidth commits at less than 1$ a mbit / month, and sprinkle half cheaper electricity
Then I will go ahead and create several "smart economy" jobs here, in meantime my business will continue to directly support jobs in US and continent

Anyways how much is the taxpayer being charged to having this wankfest being organised ? and that clown televised??
I sure hope the irony of many people in this country not be able to stream the event doesnt go unnoticed

Since it's an EU event, the Germans are presumably paying for it - and, extraordinary as it might seem, people do occasionally learn things at such events.

Also, the stream seems to be there for me. Is it not there for you? There's not anything due to be on it until 9am.

    regards,
    Scofflaw

Oh its playing for me alright, some guy setting up laptop

but I also realize i am one of the minority of people in this country who has UPC cable

good luck trying to watch this on the mobile broadband (midband or worse it should be called) that eamon harps so much about

edit: tried watching thru 3g phone, no luck

anyways maybe someone should ask this joker

why are they using USTREAM, a service setup in silicon valley and run from the very excellent (and premium) INTERNAP network in US again

why nothing like that has sprung up in Ireland or Europe for that matter? not having cheap and reliable bulk network access would be one, not having anything closely resembling the venture capitalist funds like in the US is another.

we are in a situation where a stream on smart economy crosses the ocean several times! FFS

the closest we get is having the state subsidised HEANET stream events on their very much under utilised network, and yes dont get me started on dealing with HEANET, during my time doing a masters it was less hassle to send 2 dozen GBs of project files on dvd disks to a researcher/partner in another Irish institute as compared to the hassle and bureaucracy of trying to send the same files via HEANETs barely used multigigabit network that would have done that faster than snail mail!

That's a fair point - I'm not aware of any equivalent European sites. Same for Google, Youtube, Flickr, etc, although there are European social network sites. And certainly the thought of trying to set such a thing up in Ireland would give me the cold sweats.
