I presume you need to bring your charger so who thought of charging customers when we can charge stuff for free on the trains? Or is it going like Ryanair, will we soon see coin slots beside the power sockets and in train toilets doors?

You obviously don't need your charger as they list the supported devices int he ad. Nobody will use it at those prices though so seeing as it's a private company operating them, the prices will fall until they make some money.

but what is the point when you can charge your laptop or phone on the train?

irish rail should concentrate on serving their customers on the trains first as they still refuse to take complaints about rail gourmet even when it is irish rail that advertise a snack service on trains that occasionally does not happen!

You say it occasionally does not happen. Implying most of the time it does happen. You can't expect 100% perfection anywhere.

I haven't seen them yet but I assume they are like vending machines - installed free of charge by a third party and with a revenue split between them and Irish Rail.

Do you bring your phone charger with you everywhere? I think that is the market they are going after and as the poster above said...it's just like a vending machine, nothing really to do with IE apart from them getting paid by the provider to put their machine in the station, hopefully reducing IE's subsidy a bit and keeping fares down as much as possible. I'd be dissappointed if IE weren't trying to "sweat their assets" and station floorspace is an asset!
