Information on Renault Grand Scenic

    Hi,
This is my first post. I'm thinking of purchasing a used MPV and I have never used one before. At the moment the Renault Scenic seems to fit the bill. Has anyone any information or horror stories that I should be aware of before I take the plunge?
Maybe there is a better MPV I should be looking at.

    regards,
    June

Hi Lady Driver, what year Scenic? If it's the new one it's great, I had one for a test and I have 2 kids, it couldn't have been better.
That said, it is a Renault and although they have come along leaps and bounds over the last few years in terms of reliability there still might be a few niggles.
The 1.5dci engine is the same one found in the Qashqai.
There's not much out there that's cheaper though.

    Thank Bodhan,
Hoping to go used no older than 2008. Need an mpv for growing family. Wondering if a renualt is the way to go?

Renault are cheap with a good amount of kit. Not a bad looking car either, there are no major problems reported so far as I can find but the other guys on here know more about that that I do.
You could look at a Ford Smax if the budget would stretch to it, that's a nice car too.

Anyone considering buying a used Renault needs to tread very carefully!

A more reliable alternative would be a Corolla Verso.

The Corolla Verso is much more expensive though.

A Zafira would be cheaper and nearly as reliable as the Toyota though, certainly it will be much better than a Scenic.

    ........

    You mean to purchase?

When you factor the costs to repair the Renault (and repair it will need) and the depreciation it will suffer, the Toyota will end up being very competitive.

(PS I hate all this sector of cars. If you need 7 seats, buy a proper full-sized MPV)

I heard stories like that before we bought a Scenic, and to be honest, it was one of the most reliable cars we had. We changed to a second one two years later and it too was faultless. Both were diesels (a DTi and a DCi)

My brother had a petrol scenic and I had to change a crank sensor and the pencil coils in it. Apart from that, it too gave no grief in nearly three years of motoring.

With regard to the newer Scenic from late 03 on, the 1.5 diesels came in 80 and 106bhp form. The former is not the quickest car about, but is acceptable to most and delivers modest MPG. The latter is better, but rare enough. From memory, the only significant issue was problems with the dash clusters loosing brightness.

If it were me looking for a reasonable MPV runabout, I'd consider the Scenic first. As for the Verso, nice but expensive, and a deceptively small boot.........

Said with such confidence, yet wrong. If we were tallking about 2003 or 2004 Scenics then you'd have a point but the OP specifically said nothing older than 08. In that case the Scenic is more reliable than the Verso or Zafira. The Citroen C4 Picasso is better still so the OP should consider it too.

Looking at a 05 Grand Scenic myself. 1.6 petrol with 78k Klms for €4500
Seller took it as P/X and looking to move it on quickly - he says the cank sensor needs to be done, did this cost you much to do?
This is exactly what i've been looking for and a good bit cheaper than anything else i've seen so far - clean (from the pics) 1 owner and never in an accident (recorded anyway)
Would love an s-max but don't have the funds

You'd change the crank sensor in a few minutes and I think they are around €35. The question is, for such a definite handy fixable fault, why isn't the seller doing it himself.
I'd be very careful with that one.....;)

The Zafira would be good deal smaller. The middle row, middle rear seat is very small.

We've had a 2007 Grand Scenic 1.5DCI 106bhp for the last number of months. It's just been through a grueling family holiday without missing a beat. The worst MPG (hard motorway driving) I've been able to get is around 45MPG / 6.3l/100km, normally it runs around 53MPG / 5.3l/100km and can do 60MPG / 4.7l/100km if driven carefully. The only complaint I've got is the level of hand contortion required to change headlight bulbs. Personally I'd also like leather, an autobox and cruise control, but it's mainly my wife who drives it.

Anyone any more thoughts on the new grand scenic ten months later?
I will be taking the plunge soon (i hope!)

    Holy resurrected thread batman...

Still no design faults to report. No breakdowns. It recently went in for the NCT and needed only a suspension ball joint at 105k kms so maybe a little premature but not unheard of with any make, about €20 for the part and an hours labour to fit.
Other than that oil and filters, tyres and brake pads and a little bit of panel damage due to me being a klutz.
