A jetliner skidded down the tarmac at JFK Airport amid a shower of sparks when faulty landing gear caused its pilot to make an emergency landing Saturday night, authorities said.
Amazingly, no one was hurt when Delta Flight 4951 diverted to the Queens airport at about 8 p.m. after the crew noticed the jet's right wheel was jammed in the up position, Port Authority police said.
"Brace for landing," the pilot warned his 60 passengers and three crewmembers onboard before the hulking jet hit the runway.
"Heads down! Heads down!" a flight attendant repeatedly yelled as the CRJ 900 twin-engine jet slammed on the runway and slid to a stop, leaning to its right side.
"I've never prayed so hard in my whole life," said Loretta Hill, 39, of Milford, Conn. "I was just crying and praying to God that we would be okay."
The plane - a connection flight operated by Atlantic Southeastern Airlines - made the heart-stopping landing with only two of its three sets of landing gear, authorities said.
"I understand your right gear is stuck down," an air traffic controller said to the pilot.
"No, it's up," the worried pilot replied, according to a recording captured on the website liveatc.net.
Passengers aboard the White Plains-bound craft sensed trouble moments before they were warned of the hard landing.
"I knew there was a problem when we continued circling," said David Freda, 49.
"At first, I was pretty nervous, no doubt about it," said Freda, who was visiting Atlanta for a technology convention.
"It's been a bit nerve-wracking," said Freda. "(But) everyone's okay."
"It was startling, jolting," said Chase Benzenberg, 26, of Westchester. "I was calming people down behind me."
Moments after the crash, responders rushed to the jet, which had originated in Atlanta, Ga., authorities said.
Passengers evacuated from the main entrance and boarded a bus to Terminal 3, a spokesman for the airline said.
"The pilots and them did an excellent job," said Hill. "They kept everybody calm."
Some of them were still waiting for their luggage two hours later and about to board shuttle buses to White Plains.
It was not immediately clear what caused the malfunction.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been called to investigate, a spokesman for the airline said.
In March 2009, the engine of an American Airlines jet broke apart after taking off from JFK Airport.
The plane was forced to reverse direction and make an emergency landing after shards of the turbine blades showered nearby streets. None of the 88 passengers or five crew members were hurt.
