Replace boiler controller for wireless model

I have a gas boiler in an outside shed controlled by a separate clock timer - a Flash Programmer (Hager I think). It is a basic unit - clock in 10 minute push-in segments, rocker switch for timed on, constant on and constant off. The clock has stopped working - although the constant on works fine.

This seems a good excuse to replace the timer with a wireless model - if possible. It'd be great not to have to go out in the cold and turn the clock on/off but instead control the heating from inside the house.

We have no thermostats in the house so have always just used the clock function and then gone outside to turn on/off if the house was too hot/cold.

Would one of the Danfoss/Salus wireless controllers I've seen recommended here work for me? Would it be possible to simply swap out the Flash Programmer for a new wireless unit? If so, easy enough to do myself or would I need to get an electrician to do it for me?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm going to try and start using these units soon ,they are very easy to install aswell.

They can be left sitting on a surface ,without mounting them.

    You can indeed Gordon.

I would highly recommend the Danfoss TP7000RF with an RX1 receiver. It is a programmable room thermostat. The receiver would replace your existing faulty time switch and the thermostat can be place remotely to the receiver like in a hall way or living room (hall way would be best out of a draught and not over a radiator). It's a great piece of kit.

They're new as far as I know ,most places can get them. But no one seems to have any in stock.

I would in this instance go with the danfoss one;s although i loved myson but they seem to use the irish for test beds for new technology....

Case in case being the electric boiler...

I usually install danfoss myself ,but the programmable stats aren't great for instant control.

As fas as I know the myson has a boost function etc.

Have you sold many of the myson units joey ?

Myson controls are not the most popular...Mainly due to the fact the competition is easier to use...Flash is still popping up in loads of places...No doubt a heatmerchants special...

The main thing i done from myson was there zone valves....Although pulsar seems to be king here lately.... Fecjin sureflow...

Value....> Thats an interesting point... I never understand why anyone spends 1-2k on a boiler than buys poor controls.....

Just gets me.... tbh nothing beats the simplicity of dial and pin...Even the baby sitter can use it...where as nothing beats the comfort of wireless...especially with oil

So paying 1k for controls makes them better controls ?

All these devices are simple to make ,so paying hundreds for them doesn't make sense imo.

Wireless stats make perfect sense when you're house is warm enough and it's -5 outside with the boiler still on.

Not sure about the heatmiser controls ,but it does mention that they can be part of a network with assigned adresses.

It looks like a groovy setup ,they seem to have exterior sensors aswell as cylinder stats , so you can monitor everything from a laptop screen or the oul iphone :D

Thanks all for the replies. JohnnieK, what sort of price would I be looking at for the Danfoss you recommended? My gas boiler is a Potterton Prima, at a guess about 10 yrs old, so I wouldn't want to be spending huge money on the wireless controller.

I put one in for a friend a few months back and as far as I can remember it was around the €190 mark including vat for the base unit and the thermostat but they do sell them as a pack and it works out cheaper. I got the single units in Radionics but try heatmerchants too.

I have the wired 12v kit running 5 zones and 1 DHW but I find the touchpad http://www.heatmisershop.co.uk/products/Central-Control-%252d-Heatmiser-Touchpad.html a necessity as you'll be running around the house checking each stat for temp set or on off times. Everything can be controlled from the touchpad and it has great features. Giving the system a look over on the touchpad once a day ensures that my burner does not run for one second more than required.

No problems using wireless controls BUT I would suggest you have TRV's on all rads to save energy/heating.
The Heatmiser units are excellent, have fitted 11 units in one house all on CAT5 no problems controlling underfloor heating.
Rgds. PS to save more money start using LED lights !.
