A good idea to bring an iphone away travelling?

Hey, I'm thinking of buying an iphone but I'm going travelling through Asia in the new year and was just wondering if it would be a good idea to bring it with me? I'm thinking it would be really handy but am just worried that it's too expensive to bring...

Also, has anyone gone travelling before and had their iphone with them? What's wi-fi availability like?

    I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions :)

Thanks alex73. Did you find yourself watching it all the time? I'd just be afraid of leaving it anywhere if I'm going anywhere where I shouldn't bring it, like scuba diving or something like that..

Did you buy a local sim card? The roaming rates are crazy as far as I know...

Just out of curiosity, do you know if you can use an iphone on a plane? You know the way you're not allowed use phones, but you are ipods, is there any where to knock the phone feature off while flying? Sorry this might sound like a really stupid question!

Yes I'd recommend getting a local sim for what ever country you are in, as you said, roaming charges are mental!

And yes, the iPhone has 'airplane mode' just switch that on, and use your iPhone as an iPod until you land!

Doesn't VF give you a good roaming package?

I doubt their roaming packages would be affordable if you were roaming in the far easy for a few months!

woulda thought battery life would be a bit prohibitive personally

I remember plug sockets being a bit of a luxury in thailand for example

Definitely bring mine anywhere. Didn't bring it to a music festival because I knew I'd be incapacitated all weekend but always take it on holidays. Not sure about Asia specifically but Wifi hotspots are more and more common. A lot of cafe's etc... would have free Wifi for customers and Facetime/Skype is cool too when you're travelling.

As for worrying about it, yes it's a very expensive phone, but once the novelty wears off you won't be thinking about it like that. It's just a tool at the end of the day and no point in buying it if you want to lock it in a safe and only use it on special occassions. Just make sure your travel insurance will cover it (a lot of insurance only insures phones up to a few hundred quid so double check).

    Enjoy your trip :D.

That solar charger is a great idea, thanks!

And thanks NothingMan about that travel insurance tip, I'm buying travel insurance soon so will definitely be asking them about that! :)

I've ordered the iphone so counting down the days til I get it... will be logging in 5 times a day to check if it's dispatched :D

well only thing i noticed in thailand was that the net cafes were riddled with viruses :)Unless your well off the beaten track, you should have no problem with power.

my sister is currently in thailand with an iphone and its very handy but her vf rates are sooo high 50cent a text and then 2euro a min to call/recive calls she is on PAYG tho but having wifi in most of the hostels and a locker with a lock is handy cause we can skype her alot!
if she was staying longer she would of got a sim but she was only stopping for two weeks on her way home from oz

    Whats wrong with my post?
I went to a few different net cafes while i was there, and they both have dodgy versions of xp on them (not activated, warning its illegal copy etc), with every adware know to man installed on them.

Found other mentions of it here as well

You mentioned viruses, not adware or illegal software.

And how would these viruses transfer themselves to an iphone??

Yes they also had viruses. Can't recall which one it was, think it was an msblaster variant at the time.
I don't recall saying it would transfer to the iphone though. Nope.. I did not.

Are could be robbed anywhere even in Dublin. You can buy local sim cards. Roaming was not too expensive. Best if you have wifi in Hotel you can conntact via skype.
