GREAT ETHIOPIA RUN - NOVEMBER 2010 - ADVICE REQUESTED : )

    Hi all,

On November 21st i will be going to Ethiopia, to take part in the Great Ethiopia Run with about 30 other work colleagues. We will be raising about €3000 each, and donating all funds to help in the combat against blindness in Ethiopia.
I have never ever done anything like this before, but i jumped at the chance. It's for a good cause, and it will be an experience i'm sure.

Anyhow,i'm just wondering is there anyone out there in Boardsie-Land who has run this event before? It is being held at an altitude of 9000 ft,and in temperatures of about 30 degrees.
Has anyone any experience of this event in past years?
Guess i'm just wondering how to prepare for it - (obviously other than drinking lots of water and being able to run haha).
We will be there for 5 days.

    Any info appreciated.

    Thanks all! :D

The altitude is gonna be a major shock to the system so its gonna be hard and five days is not enough time to get used to this. There are some places in ireland which do sessions in altitude tents which may help but regardless its not gonna be pretty im afraid best of luck to you though its a great race i have watched it though to do this race will be an "experience" and just focus on getting around and try enjoy it
If you think your going out slow..... go slower @ 9000ft you are going to suffer

I would worry more about the temperature than altitude although a quick scan on the web indicates that 30 degrees would be very rare in Addis Ababa. 10k is not too long. If in any difficulty, just stop running and walk to the finish.

In the days before the race move very slowly as in don't bother with a training run and you won't find the altitude a problem on race day.
In the days / weeks before the race get into the routine of drinking lots of water.
On race day try to stay to the edge of the race field rather than in the middle when hanging around waiting for the start because the radiated body heat from other competitors will increase the air temperature by a few degrees.
