    hi,

when i try to open any movie file (mostly avi), quicktime opens as default but i want the default to be vlc...where can i change this so all avi files open automatically in vlc instead of me manually opening each file in vlc myself??

Right click and Get Info on an avi file. Use the Open With drop-down menu to select VLC, check the "open all files with this application" box, click Change All.

Perian is also good, it allows you to open AVI's in quicktime, also has a bunch of other codecs. Also Flip4Mac is also an essential app, it allows you to open wmv in quicktime.
