People seem to quote Ben-Hur and Laurence of Arabia; although I personally haven't seen either.

I will however completely vouch for the best historical drama I've ever seen, the two seasons of ROME. Fantastic characters, story, settings and beautifully shot with authentic, quality garb. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Brief Encounter? That was set in the 1940s! Great Film I grant you but not the antiquity he was expecting I would say

Spartacus would be my twopence worth. Based on a real event. Saw it recently in the cinema when it was re-released as a classic movie.

A movie like 300 totally misreprsents the facts totally.

Interesting topic; I was trying hard to think of something.

A recent film which I haven't yet seen but might be what you're after is Agora. It stars Rachel Weisz and was directed by Alejandro Amenabar.

    IMDB description:
A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria.

I remember looking forward to this but it didn't get much of a (or any?) release here. Reviews seem to be a bit mixed. Has anyone seen it?

All I can think of otherwise are the older, big epic-style ones like Ben Hur, Spartacus, Cleopatra, Quo Vadis etc.

Gladiator - not the most historically accurate, but great.

Centurion is also a bit of fun.
