Mac, Dual Booting & Viruses

So I recently bought my first Mac (3 months ago) and I've got both a virtual machine running Windows and a Dual booted version of Windows too.

In the past month I've had fraudulent activity on 2 different credit cards and I'm wondering could the source be some KeyLogger via my MBP?

    Is this possible in anyway?

If you have any version of Windows installed you are still susceptible to Windows based attacks same as any other hardware.

It's possible it happened on the Windows side, I guess. But it's probably more likely you used your credit cards on a site that either got hacked or sold your details to someone, or was just dodgy to begin with. Any sites that you used both credit cards on?

I wouldn't do any sort of casual browsing/purchasing while running windows. I only use it to run the odd program that I can't find a mac equivalent for.

I possibly have used both credit cards on Ryanairs site.

It could be a pure coincidence but I'm a little suspicious now.

Just curious - what apps cant you find an alternative for?

I still haven't found a way to manage my iPod so I still use WinAmp through Windows.

I also use the various browsers on Windows for web development testing purposes.

Dare we wonder quite what iTunes can't do for your iPod?:)

Trying to export 100GB of music into an empty iTunes library is proving to be quite problematic.

Would happily switch to iTunes if I could solve this issue.

erm, that's either a file system copy (removing the db files from the ipod to the HD) or a sync that iTunes is more than capable of - I sync 135gb of music, videos and pictures with no hassle, and have done several complete wipe restores.

There are plenty of decent and free iPod file removal tools for the mac, in fact I don't think I've used a windows version to do said copy.

I don't use iTunes I prefer Media Monkey. But I have around 100GB of music which regularly hook up to iTunes, with no problem.

How do you export to iTunes. You can import ok, but export what option is that. ? What are you exporting it from?

What exactly is this? I've tried so many times now, I don't remember what attempts I've made and what ones I haven't.

Wouldn't syncing my iPod with an empty iTunes library not remove tracks from my iPod. I thought this was the way iTunes always worked?

And BostonB, i'm trying to export my music on my iPod into iTunes. I guess I'm importing it into iTunes but getting it off my iPod in an ordered manner is the problem. I've tried some alternatives but they've made a mess of the process.

Last time I did that, I mounted the iPod in disk mode. You enable Windows Explorer (or Finder for Mac users) to see hidden files. (not sure if that works will all iPods) then simply copy all the folders to a folder on the HD. Then I import that folder back into iTunes allowing it to reorganize the music.

If they are MP3's and not ACC files. You can run something MediaMonkey on it, which will create a folder structure from the Mp3 tags. MediaMonkey allows you to arrange the structure whatever way you want.

Ok, without knowing exactly what you are trying to achieve, what you have already done, and what your setup is, from a quick google I got this. It illustrates the principle, but like BostonB says there are other tools to do it.

Something like Dougs Apple Scripts rings a bell to me, because it was only 2 albums I had to recover.

Thanks for the advice/links. Will have a look and see if I can get it to work.

I'm not doing a great job of explaining what I need to do or where I'm having the problems either.

But it looks like it'll be easy to transfer my music from iPod to MBP using the process outlined in the link above.

The issue I've had before is that I've never been able to end up with an iTunes library which perfectly replicates my iPod. Large amounts of songs & albums have been missing and those that were transferred over to my HD and that I imported into iTunes often had incorrect tags.

The problem is that when dealing with > 10,000 songs, it's a lot of effort to manually fix any of the above issues.

Will give this a go anyway.

    Cheers!

When I have a bit of time later I can formulate a more coherent response, but I feel your pain going through a large music collection.

I did the exact same thing moving mine to the NAS, doing all the album art, tagging, etc. It all started with the idea of backing up my CD collection into FLAC and mp3. Flac doesn't play in iTunes so I added m4a to the mix and tried to operate 2 separate libraries which didn't work, so now I have a FLAC library independent from a M4A+Mp3 duplicated library.

Nice and complicated? Hope it's worthwhile I spent a good couple of months at it.
