    Landrover discovery Td5, year 1999, 105K miles,nct

    €4,350

What do you guys think about this? it's on Donedeal.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1582883

Is this a 2.5ltr, any idea of what the MPG is and what is it's pulling power like. Nothing heavy or anything like that to pull.

    Thanks

Cheapish, probably because it's €948 pa road tax.

Should do around 28-30mpg, only get 25 out of my Defender but I've a heavy right foot and big tyres, the Td5 likes plenty of revs. They will happily tow 3.5t, learn to use low box if you want to save your clutch starting with a heavy load, the anti-stall works well though. Check the transfer lever does what it should, they can be seized through lack of use. It may not have difflock though, LR omitted it on early Disco IIs claiming that with ETC it didn't need it!

105k for a Td5 engine is nothing if it's been serviced regularly (ignore the manual and change all the filters at the same time, it has two oil filters). At that sort of mileage, the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump can go, on the other hand they may not and other issues with an early one should have been sorted long ago. Spares support and advice is readily available.

    Thanks 101sean, that's great information.

    What about a Range Rover?

Maybe not this one with this high mileage but similar?

    Thanks

That's a P38 (old model) but with grille and lights of the current one and side vents off a Sport. It's a bit over priced but does look good.

The BMW diesel is reliable but has glacial performance. The P38s had a reputation for electrical unreliability but any still around should have been sorted plus you can buy cheapish diagnostic kit to diy. Just make sure absolutely everything works inc all the suspension settings.

Have used a 01 Td5 ES for the past two and a half years, would find it hard to part with. Had a few bits and pieces to do with it along the way but when kept serviced, all is fine.

Just bought this today. Little less than the asking price.

Won't see it for another 3 weeks as I'm still in NewYork.

Are there any engine performance mods for this vehicle?

    Thanks

Looks very nice and a good price.

Lots of performance and other mods possible, buy one of the Land Rover comics next time you are passing Easons.

As yours is a 2000 model, it will have a non flashable ECU but that's easily sorted. The gods of Td5 tuning are Ian at http://www.irbdevelopments.com/,
Pete at http://bellautoservices.co.uk/ and http://www.td5alive.com/ They all co-operate. Do not bother with plug in tuning chips or back street tuners, they are a waste of time.

Before you do anything else, ditch the cat in the front pipe if fitted, ditch the centre exhaust for a straight through pipe, dump the EGR in the bin where it belongs and fit an ITG air filter, none of this affects the NCT/DOE and helps the turbo spool up a bit quicker.

A popular appearance mod is to change to front lights for the later ones, you can get complete kits with a DVD of how to do it. There thousands of accessories and toys available, consult one of the comics and some of the Land Rover forums (Land Rover Addicts is the best)

Thanks for that Sean. Anything available in Ireland or do I have to make a trip to the UK?

Great info from you. Do you work on these and where are you based?

Alive tuning will do it by post (you send them your ECU) but it's better to have them do it person so it can be road tested, there is no standard tune, it depends what you want from the vehicle (and how deep your pockets are ). I don't know if IRB or BAS have agents here.

It's worth just driving the vehicle for a while and doing some of the simpler tweaks first, the Td5 is a lively engine, you'd need to do them before a tune anyway.

I'm in Tipp but am just an enthusiast and don't work on them for a living, happy to advise anyone passing this way though. They are easy to work on and the electronics are diy if you buy a Bearmach Hawkeye or the new Nanocom. Loads of free advice out there as well.

    Congrats on your purchase txpjl.

I drove the one in the first post last saturday, seemed clean, seller seemed honest, but I want to see one or two more to be sure, I thought the engine was very noisy when pushing on. dunno if they're normally so loud.

Man they're bright and airy though, two sunroofs, alpine lights, air con in the back two rows, lovely machine.

They can be a bit raucous when pushed but shouldn't sound rattly. They have a distinctive engine note which I like and they are capable of starship mileage if looked after.

Sun roofs should be OK on DIIs but are the downfall of earlier discos, the drain tubes block and much of the back end of the body rots as water gets behind the trim and carpets

    Good luck JohnBoy.

101sean, I'm heading back to Tipp also.

    Thanks

    Tipp here too.

No rattles sean, just loud, kinda boomy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

If it's had the mid silencer removed that can make it a bit boomy, downside of tweaking but you get used to it. Damaged exhaust could do the same.

Turns out txjpl's family are near neighbours, small world :)

Whereabouts are you John, getting crowded in here!

    Hi,

I agree with the Dusco being a nice machine. I have a Special Vehicles 2002 Disco 2, got it from the UK. Excellent machine.....but keep it serviced, and do all the preventative maintanence stuff, and it should last for years. Waxoyl the underneath, check the Engine Injector Loom for oil contamination to the ECU..(its an easy fix)

Run a Diognostic every now and again. Even if you never use the low range...use it!!! It stops it seizing from lack of use. I love mine, but I look after it. I buy the parts myself fromthe UK. Join your local landrover club!!

Hi Guys , just bought a 03 commercial td5 and have inherited a few problems
vibration could be a propshaft ?
diesel pump seems to be playing up and starting can be slow?
also seems to be a good flat spot is this normal?
mileage is 85k so not to bad
    any help would be great
    based in clare
    thanks in adance:(

Is the vibration speed specific, can you feel it through the steering? I think the rear prop on Disco 2s has a rubber donut joint that is prone to failure. Best bet is get underneath with handbrake off, box in neutral and wheels chocked and check eveything.

Fuel pumps usually get noisy when failing but proper check is to connect a pressure gauge in the system and see if you have 4bar fuel pressure. Other cause could be leaking fuel pressure regulator, usually indicated by a diesel leak dropping on the starter.

A Td5 should fire up instantly, is yours slow turning over or turn over well but not start? A failing starter can lead to difficult starting, turns over OK but is sending a dirty electrical spike back up the loom that interferes with the crank sensor just behind.

Shouldn't have a flat spot but they do like plenty of revs. What sort of revs are getting the flat spot? Does it struggle to do over 3000 revs? The AFMs can fail leading to poor fuelling. Unplug the AFM (on outlet pipe from air cleaner) and if performance improves, that's your culprit. Only fit genuine AFMs.

Come back with more precise details if you can, know it can be difficult if you just have a feeling about it but you could go chasing the wrong thing. Would help if you could get it plugged in and faults read.

Hi 101sean , thanks for the info I guess I was a bit vague I will get back to the drawing board for more specifics., and I will keep you informed :Djust tried her again and you can hear the fuel pump trying but no joy it seems to retry again and again ,this was a problem that was sold to me as I just looked and the carpet covering the pump has been surgically cut to reveal the pump cover however having removed the cover the pump has never been out looking at the caked dust//muck.
have any of you ever removed the pump and if you have what should I beware of?
