The evolution of my Rocker Cover.

So as a fan of Call of Duty Modern Warfare i quite liked the "Digital Camoflauge" that could be applied to weapons.

I had a mad idea to apply it to my Rocker Cover.

I went to Halfrauds and got 2 cans of Paint, Ford Moon Dust Silver, Rover Amethest Grey, and Matt Black, i went and got 3M Masking Tape.

I downloaded some digital comflauge shapes from the net and using a scalpel i cut the shapes out using the Masking Tape.

My OEM colour was peeling slightly to i got out the Nitromors and applied it to the cover.

    This is the result:

So I Masked off the pipe exit for the breather pipe and also for the oil cap, I then sprayed the cover with heatresistant white primer:
A little trick is to put the tins of paint into warm water, this makes the paint nice and sticky coming out of the tin and it dries faster.
    IMG_0261.jpg

I then sprayed the First coat of silver.
    IMG_0262.jpg

I applied the cut out shapes.
    IMG_0270.jpg

Sprayed with the next colour (Note the stickers under the colour)
    IMG_0272.jpg

I then applied the next set of stickers (remember the ones underneath are still on)
    IMG_0276.jpg
    IMG_0278.jpg

I then sprayed the Matt Black final layer
    IMG_0279.jpg

After the paint paint "Dried" i pulled off all the stickers.
    IMG_0282.jpg

I kinda made a balls of the final part, i had to go home back to Dublin and pulled the stickers off too early and didnt leave the Black top coat rest long enough, so the lines arent 100%

I then deceided to see if Tallght Powder Coating could do it, but they couldnt so i went with this:

I also got the legs of my Strutt brace done.

I actually think the camo idea is a cool one - if you then went over the Honda logo etc with a good thin paintbrush and some bright red/blue paint it would finish it off.

Fair play for thinking outside the box!

Have to say I quite like that Blue cover Cronin, why couldn't Tallaght do it out of curiosity?

EDIT: Mathepac beat me to it...I do have this fancy edit button here though so I could get the kudos...:D

The masking tape would lift in the oven man.. its not like paint where one is applied and the other..

Cool rocker cover! Love the camo look. Really unique. Nice in blue too mind.

Another trick to mask of areas that are hard to use tape on is good old vaseline. The paint won't stick to it. rub some into the bolt threads too so they don't get painted. Work washing up liquid into a lather after the nitromors too and rinse a lot. Aluminium is a porous metal and nitromors can leach through your new paint if you're unlucky. Trust me I was that soldier on another car.

The OEM Honda paint is so bloody delicate. I'm lucky with just one tiny chip, but few make it to any mileage without peeling. Its damn near impossible to copy the OEM crinkle finish too.

OP, I reckon you did a good job aside from the stickers.
It looked well prepped and the first coat you put on looked tidy.
Unfortunately the sticker bits did look a bit untidy.
You gotta try these things though.
I though the bits done in blue looked well.

That's the most useful piece of advice I've heard in a while.
I've always had to clean up the bolts after spraying.
Christs Wibbs, is there anything you don't know?

Im gonna try this again with a different cover, i think my brother might have cracked it for me, getting someone with a plotter to make up the stickers for me, they are sure to be straight then.

Wibbs, thats not the first time i heard that, i made sure i washed the metal in a 40 gallon drum out the back...

I once tried respraying the dash trim on an FTO I owned.
Made a right balls of it.
If you read up on it the amount of effort it takes to do it properly is unreal.
All in the prep work I guess.

I reckon you'll find it hard to get it exactly the way you want.
Personally I think rocker covers and the like look best with one base colour and then say white for the lettering.

Dash trim is a right balls, not only you but the previous owners may have used silicone based dash cleaner to clean the dash, that makes it almost impossible no how hard you try to get paint to adhere to it.

Im gonna leave the lettering on my rocker cover metal looking

    Nice...
One of the cleanest examples I've seen.
I usually prefer white rims on them but what's on it works well.
    Many mods done to it?

Yes that's a beauty alright. Sits really nicely. Funny I prefer the black rims. Grey OEM's too?

Don't ever use that stuff in a ventilated room.
You'll never get high that way.

Get it soda-blasted. Like sandblasting but much, much finer grade of blasting medium. Removes the paint and leaves metal alone.
When using any chemicals for stripping the paint, you do need to wash the part properly with panel wipe and dry it, to make sure that no chemical remains on the part.
It could latter interfere with the paint.

Just looking at your car again. Damn it's in great order. Looks really well. Sits really nicely and I love the grey OEM wheels. Watching the auctions years back I did see a couple of championship very light yellow white R's that appeared to have the grey wheels from new. You even have the wind deflectors. Git. :D

+1 like I said earlier if you don't get rid it will come back to haunt/bubble you. Washing up liquid and water will deactivate it if well brushed in. Ali is a bugger because its so porous. Mild steel it's not so much an issue I've found.
