Survival questionnaire (research for a possible game)

    Hi,

I am currently studying Game Design & Development and am in the early stages of creating a casual zombie themed game focussing heavily on the survival aspect. I have put together a little questionnaire which will greatly help me in the developing process of this game. I have read several threads on this forum and have already found a few helpful posts scattered around but I'd still very much appreciate it if you took 5 minutes to fill this out. Just copy the questionnaire into your own post and write the awnsers underneath each question. Thanks!

Before you start filling out this questionnaire know the following:
    - The zombies investing the world are of the slow and dumb kind.
    - You are not bugging out, you have decided to stay holed up in your house.
    - You are home alone.
    - Your home has a yard.
    - You are situated in an urban environment with a forested area at the edge of town.

    Questionnaire:

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

    -

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

    -

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

    -

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

    -

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

    -

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

    -

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

    -

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

    -

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    -

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    -

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

    -

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

    Questionnaire:

    Q
At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

    A
straight away I would fill as many (closable) containers I have in the house with water and refrigerate. this would mean after the water cuts (after a couple of weeks) I should still have another supply to last another week. I would stay in my house until almost ALL food was eaten meaning I could last up to 4-6 weeks on that alone.

this would mean I would dodge the initial panic stage of the Zompocalypse. meaning it would be farely void of most human life. there are several shops close by I would most likely cycle with an empty rucksack to them to avoid attracting attention with the noise of a car. unfortunately the food of a shopping centre would no last forever and I would eventually travel to the other side of the country where my uncle owns a plot of land capable of supporting itself.

    Q
It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

    A
as said above, bicycle. simply to stay as quite and as fast as possible.

    Q
Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

    A
I would wear thick clothing leaving as little flesh on show as possible to avoid (in case of an attack) the skin being broken.
I would carry a machete with a blade of about 18 inches as well as a shovel which I will hammer flat and sharpen (preferably a light weight handle not made of wood like most)

    Q
When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

    A
an area with multiple shops (but not the likes of a shopping centre or city centre) a row of shops can be found in several places around a single area. thats where I would start as these would mostly include pharmacies and food shops.

    Q
What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

    A
Any kind of disinfectant, medical supplies for day to day wounds, items that can be used as weapons such as large bludgeons. batteries, better quality defensive clothing.

    Q
What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

    A
a single zombie, I would attempt to lay a heavy kick to the chest to knock them down and then behead as quickly as possible by standing on both arms and using the shovel to behead.

several zombies, I would use the machete to dismember and slow the oncoming zombies before retreating. I would finish them off on a different occasion because the way I would have injured the group several would be slower and become stragglers. making them the easiest to take out next time I came across them.

    Q
A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

    A
blacking out all windows completely and reinforcing with plywood and mesh (hard to explain over text but it is quite sturdy)
destroying the stair case and using a ladder to reach the upper floors (the upper floors will be where I would actually live)

I would attempt to mask my scent every time I entered my estate using some sort of strong smelling liquid (cologne etc.. until that ran out) so my home would stay as far off the map as possible for the Z's

    Q
You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

    A
my first port of call would be something which could collect water whether that be a trough to collect rainwater or something to collect water vapour would depend on the time of year. (I'm assuming I have plastic sheeting)

    Q
Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    A
some form of generator (maybe from scavenging) after this I would build something which can be used in the boiling of water and cooking as well as providing a small amount of heat.

    Q
Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    A
not incredibly neccessary imo but if I was to I would find and set up mirrors in such a way that I could see what was around the corners to my left and right (large mirrors not just tiny ones :P) other than that I would concentrate on designing a trusty escape route across the roof tops making use of a rope ladder I will fashion.

    Q
All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

    A
I never really thought about this because I will be the one cleaninbg up the mess :P

but I suppose I would (using lots of sheets from the house and what not) make a kind of calendar using dd/mm/yy and display it on the front of my house when the army arrive while Im holed up sleeping or out they will see the calendar with the date on it and realise that someone was there that day.

    Q
A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

    A
scavenging for supplies would be doen as a team covering off and having eachothers backs.

fortification would simply mean that we would take watch in shifts (light discipline during the night is a must) not allowing one or the other person become exhausted.with two people in two houses both well fortified it would mean we could prepare a route to the second house with some supplies and keep it as a safe house if something happens to the first to compromise it.

During an attack we would have to either A: move around a lot so that the z(s) do not specify on a single target, this will help to confuse them (not that they get confused but you should know whati mean)

or B. one person draws their attention while the second takes it out from behind.

    thanks for the survey :)
    it was fun

    best of luck everything :)

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

Hydroponic garden for fruit and veg along with rainwater from a water butt, purified using coffee filters or boiled. Chickens would provide protein in the form of eggs and I'd probably plant a few furrows of potatoes in a quiet spot nearby.

Later, hunting and trapping wild game that wanders into the forest nearby, as well as planting cereals in tilled fields.
It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

Bicycle with panniers. I'd prefer to upgrade to an electric motorbike if possible...
Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

Prior planning and preparation, then by being swift and silent. I'd want to know what time the sun goes down, where I've been before and how many Zeds I might find when I get there.

I would wear rubber gloves, boots and a mask for dispensing with any Zeds encountered.

Also, teamwork is good. I would want three or four on a scavenging trip, and at least one back at base to let you in
When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

Small corner shops and warehouses at first just to see the lie of the land. I'd check out the library for books on farming and survival techniques. A hardware shop too.

Later, or if I was with a large enough group, high value targets like Garda stations or an Army barracks.
What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

Fuel, weapons, rope, water bottles, seeds, tools, books, batteries, practical clothing, materials for barricades etc. Radio gear would be very handy, as would a hunting rifle with ammunition or a cache of swords and maces (JACKPOT!). Alcohol would be a good find (for barter of course :p).

I would love to stumble across a weapons cache left by a criminal gang (preferably dead or fled) or some military or police stuff. Most likely the best projectile weapon you could hope to find in Ireland would be a compound bow or crossbow.
What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

Ideally a two-handed katana, but probably a crowbar or a hammer.
A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

Destroy the stairs with an axe and crowbar, stock the upstairs with supplies and then form secondary and tertiary perimeters; board up the windows, fence off the garden etc.

One idea would be to acquire fencing materials from other local sites and cordon off an entire street or housing estate, if the manpower was there. In the long term, proper fortifications could be built using timber or blocks scavenged from houses. Moats are good too.
You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

A look-out tower would be handy, even if it's just a chair on your chimney and a ladder to get to it. I'll need to dig a latrine, so an outhouse will have to be built at some point.

There won't be an unlimited supply of natural gas or electricity, so that means building a barbecue bit and/or a clay oven which can run on charcoal or firewood. Also a charcoal kiln.

I would attempt to build a bow for hunting as well.
Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

Simple wind turbine hooked up to a few car batteries. Probably a VAWT using a washing machine motor and some PVC pipe. Something like this anyway.
Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighbourhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

Lookout tower, radio and by "networking" with other survivors. If the group is large enough, scouts and sentries. If there's electricity and time and the parts, a CCTV network.
All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

Maybe a signal fire? Flares? Advertising your presence could mean running afoul of a roaming gang of scavengers. I would want to be communicating by radio with any "rescuers" well in advance.

    -
A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

Work towards fortifying the entire street and share information, tools and jobs. We should probably scavenge as a team too.

    Interesting survey, thanks dude!

    Questionnaire:

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

-Firstly i would try breaking into the attic of the house next door. (this would also serve as making a bigger living space. I would check for food.

Only other alternative would be a nearby shop. But to do this i would need at least one other survivor
    .

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

-For the first while i would be using a small car. Then my old honda 50. Don't laugh, its very reliable :p

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

-Pic axe handle and an s10 respirator (SAS type gas mask), maily to stop the blood of the Z's getting on my face. A Flecktarn Parka jacket (loads of pockets). Small bag.

I do have access to a .22 rifle but i wouldn't be that good of a shot.

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

-I know this goes aaginst what you said, but there is a multistory hotel nearby. That would be my first port of call. For supplies and also a possible better fortifcation.

I would stay away from major supermarkets and use smaller shops and houses instead.

I would like to get the Gards Baracks, but i would need a few more people for this as it's situated in the town centre. The Military Baracks would be a better bet, but chances are it would have already been looted.

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

    - .22 ammunition, petrol, diesel, as many generators as i can find and maybe some new weapons.

Medical supplies would be a priority but under no surcimstances would i go near the hospital (for obvious reasons). Local chemists would have to do.

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

-Blunt weapons. My trusty pic axe handle or if i get some practice a .22 rifle (would only be for long ranges)

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

-There is a few bags of cement in my shed. The shed would then be knoked and the blocks used to to fority the downstairs windows. The same would be done for the house next door (see previous post ^^^ ). My garden is already well fortified. Surrounded by wall and fences.

I would use fences from the nearby industrail estate to form a perimitor around my house. All this would be depending on i had a few hands to help.

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

-Bridges ( about 10 foot long) to connect all the roofs of the house to each other. But i would not attempt this unless there were other survivors.

I would also like to plant a vegtable patch.

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    - I would love to build a cctv system for the house. All depending i can find the parts. This is a little far fetched. A simple CB radio would be a good call.

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    - Orgnise scouting parties (depending there is other people) or the multi story hotel. You would need transport but it is still nearby. From the top the whole town is visible.

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

-Broadcast a constant message on all AM frequencies. Flares would also be a good idea

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

Trading supplies and i would help take Z's out, from the front of his house (.22 rifle). After time if i believe he is trust worthy i would ask wether we should move into the one house (mine:p )

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

    - looting other houses i guess, my plan would be to stay away from shops as they have probably been looted a long time ago

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

    - legs, i wouldnt be travelling far enough to need any other form of transport

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

    - knives, shotgun and shovel

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

    - neighbours houses as my theory is that people will loot then bring the goods to their houses, so i take the easy route and rob houses :)

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

    - first aid, weapons, boardgames (anything to keep me entertained)

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

    - bow and arrow (silence is golden)

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

    - barricade windows, destroy stairs, stockpile second story

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

    - cupboards/ storage areas, partitions in rooms so people can have privacy

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    - a wind up radio so i can maintain contact

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    - periscope, just build a large tube and attach mirrors in the right places at 45 degree angles to allow myself to see outside, preferably place periscope out sky light to allow for easy setup

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

    - paint the roof i guess, dont paint the outside as that would alert bandits

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

    - during an attack we could use a pincer movement in which the other house comes behing the z's. we could trade each other for neccesary items, such as firewood or food. we could also maintain steady contact and share tips

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

-Fill bath and as many containers as i can spare with water as soon as i hear word of an outbreak, use tapwater until it runs out then use water supply. Also make sure the water boiler is full of hot water.....which can still be used evan when water cools. As for food, if the outbreak is far away go to the supermarket and buy as much canned and long lasting food as possible. If the outbreak is close i suppose i'll have to make use of what i have. either way i'll eventually end up scavenging.

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

-For close travel it would be by foot but if I needed to travel far i would use a bike to avoid making noise.

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

-thick clothing (leather jacket + jeans) possibly a motorbike helmet (prevents bites anywhere on head + it would help in case of attack by other survivors + if all else fails can be used as a weapon. my airsoft tac-vest will be handy for carrying supplies and weapons and having them at hand if needed. Depends on what i'm doing but either a small rucksack or large camping style rucksack. As for weaponry, bow and arrow + smaller hand held weapons + if possible a fire-arm

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

-Surrounding abandoned houses then to nearby supermarkets

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

    - Batteries, weapons, building materials,

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

    - for long range, bow and arrow, for close range a hammer/knife

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

-plywood on both sides of windows and large objects (dressers wardrobes ect) behind them. Make backgarden walls higher and block off gaps. Destroy stairs, use ladder instead.barricade end of driveway (z's can't get over walls so would block entrance against small numbers of z's.

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

    - A cart that can be towed behind bikes for carrying heavy items around. A water collection system. weapons.

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    - a winch lift for getting heavier items upstairs without a stairs

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    - periscope out skylight

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

    - make smoke grenades......very easy with the right know-how and if army spotted in the distance set one off......use red or green smoke to draw more attention. have a large s.o.s on the roof

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.
try make a way of getting to his house via the roof tops, set up a pulley systems between roofs to share supplies, use 2 way radios to stay in contact with eachother

    - Signal mirror by day, flares, smoke, torchlight, glowstick by night.
    PA system if in range.

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

    - Drop in suppplies of water, medicine, food etc. Assistence would depend on their requirements.

    Sounds fun!

    Questionnaire:

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

    - Heavy wildlife where I live. Hunting/fishing more than adequate for at least temporary use. PLANT GARDENS! Simple rain/water collection system for water. Store in basement.

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

    - Assuming fuel is limited - BIKES!! Human powered. Easy to maintain. Light enough to carry if you have to. Able to cover many miles/day if necessary.

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

-Pack light - simple "raid pack" w/ basic first aid, flares, batteries, flashlight, 2 way radio, crowbar, 2 MRE and 1 gal water. Primary and secondary missile weapon plus melee weapon.

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

-Local drug stores; vet clinic near-by; general department stores; specific guns/ammo; Mall; Lumberyard; Hardware Store.

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

-Books, manuals - "how to" guides. Candy. Batteries. Rope. Fuel. Plant Seeds.

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

    - Silent as possible - melee weapon w/ reach ideally. Crossbow. Silenced firearms are not realistic and suppressors have limited lifespan. Scavenging will be as successful as you can stay undiscovered.

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

-Completely seal off all ground floor windows/doors. Ensure 2 ways of Evac from house. One via ceiling/roof.

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

-Reinforce 6ft wooden privacy fence in backyard. Build raised walkways to connect near-by houses. "Crow's Nest" observation platform on roof of house. Sleeping quarters in attic.

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

    - Water collection system. Basic bicycle-powered generator.

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

    - Ensure regular contact local survivors. Radio broadcasts. Share 2-way radios - Crows Nest on roof w/ binoculars for local visual info.

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

-Paint up the house!!! Flares. Fireworks. Signal Mirror. Radio.

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

    - Barter - what do they have/what can they do that you can't or can't do well or don't have? Foster cooperation by making the first offering. Insist on cooperation for the good of us all and remind them that there is strength in numbers.

At some point you will run out of canned foods you had in storage. How would you go about obtaining more food? And what about water?

Probably down to the local supermarket, give it a once over then head in and take whatever remains. Other than that I'd try set up a small food garden, to grow certain veg etc. Water, I would make a trough to collect rainwater & filter it with a homemade filter.

It is undeniable that you must leave your house once in a while to scavenge for supplies. What would be your main method of getting around?

The car, it may be noisy but it is probably safer than a bike. Eventually would try to find a single decker bus which I would gut and try turn into some sort of makeshift home.

Obviously going out for supplies is a dangerous task and you must be well equipped. How would you equip yourself?

Pair of normal runners(easy to run in and more), thick clothing maybe try and incorporate light mesh underneath. Leather gloves (thick enough to protect hands but light enough so I can move my hands and use various items etc)
And a hatchet as my weapon along with two kitchen knives and a crowbar

When scavenging for supplies, are there any specific areas/locations you would head to first?

Get food first, then to a dealership to get a vehicle, head to a dump/scrapyard in an attempt to reinforce the vehicle, then onto Garda HQ to pick up some supplies. Then either to the airport/countryside or Dublin Port.

What non-food supplies would you be especially happy to find while scavenging?

Any blunt object that can be used as a weapon, a firearm, general metal/plastic/wooden objects that are in good nick to be used for fortifications etc

What would be your main method of taking out zombies that get in your way while scavenging?

Crowbar to the head or legs, depending on the situation.

A world infested by zombies is a dangerous place. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fortify your house. Using simple tools and materials, how would you go about fortifying your house?

Plywood covering the fronts of all windows, steel mesh & more plywood behind the window, doors would be bolted/nailed/screwed shut and reinforced with wood & mesh. A few snares/booby traps set up downstairs. Stairs replaced with a ladder, all supplies upstairs and then my attic would be my fall-back safehouse.

You have simple tools (what average joe has in his toolbox) and materials (what average joe used to construct his shed/fence/doghouse etc) at your disposal and a limited know-how when it comes to constructing anything with them. What would you construct which does not directly serve as a fortification for your house?

Water trough and some sort of vegetable garden housing.

Again you have simple tools, materials and know-how but now you must construct something mechanical or electric. What would you construct?

Multi-purpose generator/stove that provides cooking source, heat & light

Being bunkered up in your home gives you a limited view of what goes on in the outside world. You decide it is quite handy be able to know what is going on in your neighborhood so you can act in timely fashion when danger presents itself. How would you go about doing this?

Probably would cut a small hole in my roof with a makeshift hatch so I can look out and observe occasionally

All this time you still have hope the army might one day roll down the streets and clear this mess up. When this day comes you want them to know exactly where you are and that you are safe. How would this message be relayed?

Fashion an SOS type of flag and have it always attached to the roof. And if I heard the army passing through I would be straight out the hole in my roof with some sort of other flag/symbol letting them know I am alive and not infected etc

A couple houses over someone else is bunkered up in their house, much like you are in yours. Without suggesting you move in together, how would you help each other out be it with supplies, fortification or during an attack.

Two people make it safer going for supplies, watch eachother, can collect more supplies aswel. Easier to fortify with house as there is another person to lighten the load. We could take turns doing nightwatch also.

    Nice survey.
