Does anybody know how I could volunteer for a dig? And are any digs done outside of the summer period?

    Thanks.

what are you looking for?? dig wise i mean? anything specific?

Most digs are done in the least wet periods of the year and it can be intensive outside work so autumn/winter period maybe harder to find than say that of spring or summer.
However that said digs do take place throughout the year, if you're in a university check with the department they will direct you to known contacts, if not searching the internet won't be a bad thing.

The discovery program are known to use volunteer public excavators on some sites, universities not so much as they have a constant supply of wide eyed undergraduates. But Im sure if you wanted to volunteer to work for a consultancy they would certainly jump on the chance to further downsize their labour costs :p;).

There are year round digs going on, if you're willing to travel for them! If you check out http://www.pasthorizons.com or http://www.bajr.org there should be some listings. Past Horizons has a really useful interactive map of the world, and if you zoom into Ireland or Britain they get more detailed. There are alot of community archaeology programmes going on in England if you're interested in going there!
