Lens advise for Indoor sports

Looking to buy a lens for taking pictures of indoor sports. I have a 70-200 F2.8 Sigma for the rugby but obviously too big for the indoor martial arts pictures. Needless to say the kit lens isn't even worth talking about. To get me by at the moment I am using a Canon 50mm but at times just doesn't work. Ok for taking pictures of the kids as I don't have to move back too far but when it comes to the adults I don't always have enough room to move back further.

Talking of spending up to 1,000 euro maybe a little more for the right lens.

    Thanks.

Are you using full frame or crop sensor camera ?

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8? I know a guy who has one on his 7D and he seems to like it. Won't have to blow all your budget either.

Sorry should have side, crop sensor Canon 7D.

Was thinking the 24-70 alright, has anyone got this lens?

Some one else said about the Tamron to me too but a little nervous as I have never tried any of their gear and not sure about it, the guy that was telling me about it was raving about it, says it is one of the best lens he has.

What will you be shooting? What sort of light?

I've the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, if you need to borrow sometime.

Hi Paul, it is Martial Arts competitions for the club our son is in. The light all depends on the competition and location some of the competitions are in lovely well lit halls but others are in horrible dark halls.

Might take you up on that offer to try it out, thanks.
