Not really sure where to post this, this seems to be the most relevant though.
I'm doing my final year Graphic Design project on national identity and micronations. I'm sure some of your probably have micrnational coins....I'm designing a whole national identity from scratch, coins would look ok on paper but I am considering having a small run of coins minted which would look far superior even if it was just coppers.

I've been directed to some good sources in Canada and America but does anyone have any info of localized metal works or mints in Ireland or even the UK.

There are no private mints in Ireland AFAIK, there are many medalists. However for your purpose and the fact you only want a small run, both of these options would be way too expensive. The process for minting proper coins and medals is far more complicated than you might think, see this pobjoy mint video about custom minting: http://www.pobjoy.com/ukworld/page.php?xPage=custom_minting.html . Another popular private UK mint is http://www.towermint.co.uk/

You'd be better off going to someone who makes badges, it'll be good enough for your visual presentation. There's loads in Ireland, here's one: http://www.abbeybadges.ie/
