This needs to be rolled out for transgender patients, however this is a step in the right direction for the LGB community.

Press Release: Thursday 23rd September 2010

New HSE Patient Charter Sends a Positive Message to Gay and Lesbian People

The new patient charter, You and Your Health Service, which was launched today as part of the Department of Health’s Patient Safety First Initiative, includes an explicit commitment from the HSE that lesbian and gay people can expect to be treated with respect and dignity when they use health and social care services.
    *
“The HSE is to be commended for taking such an inclusive and affirmative approach in the new charter.* It sends out a very positive message to lesbian and gay people that their sexual orientation will be respected by staff when they use HSE services”, said Odhrán Allen, Director of Mental Health Policy at GLEN and who is a member of the Implementation Group that developed the charter.

The charter also states that patients can nominate who is involved in their healthcare treatment.* For gay and lesbian people, this provides clarification for the first time on their right to involve their partner in their healthcare. “This will be greatly reassuring for same-sex couples, some of whom will have previously encountered difficulties in having their partner recognised by health staff and involved in decision-making around their care”, continued Allen.**

The new charter is based on values such as inclusion, diversity and equity, and promotes service users being actively involved in their own health care. It describes what patients can expect when they use health and social care services in Ireland and sets out their rights and responsibilities. More information on the charter and the HSE’s Your Service Your Say strategy is available at www.hse.ie/eng/services/ysys/

Leaving the T out in this case makes even less sense than usual (and that's saying something.) A gay person who uses the health service need not even reveal his or her sexuality;so,at least in the vast majority of circumstances, it wouldn't even be an issue. Not so with transpeople, as often being trans is not something one can conceal, like ones sexuality.
