Gaggia Classic - How to clean

I have a Gaggia classic and have been using it almost daily for 3 years. I must be lucky to have non-limescaley water, because I have not cleaned/descaled it since I bought it, and its still working. I have kept it clean and removed and cleaned the shower screen and any of the bits I can get at.

I would like to perform some preventative maintenance rather than waiting for it to pack in on me, but have heard conflicting advice vis-a-vis what de-scaler to use and back-flushing.

I do not have a blank basket - so I think back-flushing is out.

Is there any brick and mortar store (Dublin) I can get an appropriate de-scaler for my machine, and how do I use it?

    Thanks!

You could try Brown Thomas, they USED to sell Gaggia machines and had the cleaning supplies.
Otherwise I suggest you purchase them online.
You will need to backflush your machine, which will require a blind basket.
You can buy the blind basket and backflush solution. That solution can also be used for cleaning your portafilters and shower screen.

De-scaling your machine is a must. Although the machine does not break down it will pollute the water when passing through the boiler. They recommend that you should descale your machine every 3 months. Similar descaler tablets can be bought online, the process is not very difficult, and when you see the greenish water coming from your machine during the cleaning you will be thankful afterwards when it calls comes out clear!
