Braces on for 4yrs

    Hi all,

So bit of background, before I got my braces I had really bad teeth, extremly crooked, front teeth overlapped etc. Ended up getting 4 teeth removed, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. Got the braces fitted and all was going well. In may this year I had the braces on 4 yrs!!!!!

My teeth to look at now are perfectly straight and brilliant looking but yet on the top I have a little gap that they are trying to close up between 2 teeth. Now it closes and then slowly starts to reopen. I have expressed my concerns with the guy I go to (not naming names) and he just keeps telling me its going to take time and then I get another appointment for 8 weeks later. He has been fully paid at this stage (has been for about 2yrs now)

I just cant stick it for much longer, I am now 25 and wonder how much longer I am going to be stuck with them for. At this stage I want them off but I know if I do, with that gap there they will just all move again.

Has anyone any help or suggestions as to what I can do????? Really gets me depressed at this stage because when I had originally gone to get them fitted he said 2 yrs and well over 4yrs later I still have a mouth full of metal :(

Sometimes its the final finnishing touches that take all the time, however its best to follow your orthodontists advice and try get the best result possible. Personally I had braces for 5 years as a kid which is easier than as an adult. Keep the faith, and look forward to a fab final result which hopefully you will have for the rest of your life.

I would discuss with the orthodontist involved. Such small spaces can be very stubborn and difficut to close. It can be related to having small teeth, ususally a lateral incisor or premolar. It is hard to give an exact prediction for treatment duration as every patient is different and individual

Talk with the orthodontist at your next visit, they are trying their best for you and want as good a result as possible. The orthodontist priced your treatment as a 2 year treatment and there has been no further charge even though things are taking much longer than predicted.

Try to stick with it. You could just accept the space if you are really fed-up or have a small build up if the tooth itself is small. If the space re-opens after closing it indicates the importance of you wearing retainers after treatment so dont forget them!

Thanks Day Dreamer. I have tried to discuss it with him but he generally just brushes me off which at this stage is getting rather annoying.

What is this small build up you are talking about?? How much would it cost?? I am afraid that even with the retainer if I get the braces taken off then my teeth will become crooked again and after all this time I dont want that

    Hi

if you wear the retainer the teeth will stay straight so dont worry about that. The teeth do tend to settle after treatment and some small movement is unavoidable and usually not a problem.

If you have a small tooth it can be made bigger or "built up", it would only be appropriate if this is what is causing the space not to close. It involves a small ammount of a white or composite filling added to the tooth and is not that expensive, I would figure €100 approx and should last many years.

    good luck

Seeing as you're not getting anywhere talking, it might be worth writing to your orthodontist saying you're happy with things generally, but outlining your concerns& ask for clarification on whatever needs clarifying.

Thanks again Day Dreamer, appreciate it. The gap is between 2 teeth on my top left side. This may sound stupid but sometimes it does close fully but will then open back up which is even more annoying.

I suppose that there may be very good reason why it taking so long, but they dont seemed to have been communicated correctly to the OP. A good sit down and discussion is in order. I would say once thats done everyone will be happier.
