Any of the Deitel and Deitel books are always good - doesn't have to be the latest version if funds are tight. The site www.cplusplus.com is an excellent resource also for help once you're started. What compiler are you hoping to use? The free version of Visual Studio (available from the microsoft) is a good place to start if you haven't picked a compiler yet.
