There is not a legal requirement to do so (as in you can't be prosecuted), but you may get into difficult with them if they find out about it. e.g. the other party starts making a clam.

Tell them nothing if you can sort it out with the other driver as in who was at fault and who is going to pay up.

When an insurance company hears about a minor accident they instantly hear $$$$$$

Why not tell the insurance company?
If its your fault, that doesnt affect your policy
If it is your fault it will.

    Why not tell them?

I think it's a bad idea to hide these things from your insurance company. There is a duty of good faith which could mess up your situation if they find that you concealed things from them.

Insurance companies will still load your premium for no fault accidents.

So if you have a minor ding in a supermarket carpark and the other guy pays up in cash you would be mad to say anything.

You only need to notify them if there will be a claim. If there is no other party involved (you hit a gate post or something) then that the end of it.

If you hit someone/something else, then it depends on what they want to do. In certain circumstances, you would have an obligation to inform the Gardaí.

This is the most accurate post IMO.

I believe still, that even if the other party wants to take it to your insurance you can still decide. If it were me, I wouldn't be making a claim unless it was damage I couldn't reasonably pay out of pocket for. But I'd want to be damn sure that there was not extra hidden damage or the person wasn't going to be saying they have whiplash etc.

Read your insurance policy document, it will tell you if they require you to contact them in the event of an accident even if you're not making a claim.
