What happens when its powered on and connected to the computer.
Do you get any lights or noises.

Try not to keep turning it on and off as the less you do with it the more chance a professional can recover data.

Ok, first try the same external drive on another computer. If it works, great, probably just a bad usb port on computer or software issue. If not, read on.
Well you need to find out if its the drive or the enclosure that is at fault. Do you have a spare laptop drive? Are you reasonably confident in holding a screw driver? Good!
Open the drive. Generally 4-6 screws, perhaps hidden under rubber feet/pads. See the drive inside? Look like the spare one you have? Good!
Unscrew the drive from the enclosure, paying heed not to lose the screws. Once your drive is free, check the connector on the drive. Does it look same as your spare drive? Or is there an adapter on the drive pins? all look the same? Good!
Put spare drive into caddy. Reverse the disassembly procedure. All back together? Good!

Plug it into your computer. Does it work? Good and not so good... Means enclosure is ok. Disassemble again, and pop back in original drive into caddy, put it back together again. Plug it in. Still not work? Bad. Means drive itself is the issue.
There are specialist places that can recover data, but they do charge a fair sum. Hopefully wont come to that!
    Good luck!

    hi guys

    thanks for advise

the lights still come on and I can hear it wirring . after a while plugged in the computer picks it up but says its unaccessible.

am afraid to open it as it seems quite complicated.

Get the hard drive to somebody who knows what they are doing if you are not keen on opening it.
If you are around Waterford I will take a look at it for you.
