Usually a VGA - VGA cable will do the trick. But the real answer is - it depends.
What inputs does the display have? What outputs does the PC have?

Any half-decent projector or screen will have a VGA connector. If I had to pick a cable blind, I'd go for a VGA cable.

Need to gather more info on the laptop type and display device...

If the laptop is an apple macbook, you'll almost certainly need an adapter from either Mini DVI or mini displayport.

Your typical 'made for windows' laptop will have a 15 pin VGA out. Most projectors have a matching VGA input. So the VGA cable provided with the projector will do.

Some new windows laptops will have only a HDMI connector, so again you will need an adapter.

Nearly all projectors will support VGA in. Some will support DVI / HDMI.

Have I thrown enough acronyms thrown at you yet?

    Lol yeah plenty of acronyms!

I'll try and find out what type of comp he has tonight and we'll try to figure it out then.
Thanks for all the replies (Can't seem to give ye individual "thanks" Must not have enought posts or something...

VGA to VGA is the most likely option alright, worth noting though that VGA / DVI dont carry sound so if you need sound you will have to get either a 3.5mm headphone jack to 3.5mm headphone jack
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Stereo-Jack-Plug-1-2M/dp/B00077DC3S/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1285197433&sr=1-1

or 3.5mm headphone jack to phono
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Tex-3-5mm-Phono-Audio-Cable/dp/B0038K7MBO/ref=sr_1_20?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1285197463&sr=1-20

Again it depens on the device its being connected to.

I have the latter of the leads with an adapter to go back to 3.5mm if I need it.
