The Great AH Ethnicity Poll?

This may or may not be a massive flop, I'm just curious to see the diversity (or lack thereof) that may (or may not) be present on Boards.

Judging by the KYN-type threads scattered around boards.ie the majority of us are pretty damn white.. I'm betting results are 75%+ white.

EDIT: For clarification, "Middle Eastern" applies to the Iraq/Afghanistan/India etc part of Asia, and "Asian" applies to those of Japanese/Chinese/Korean etc descent.

What ethnicity are you? 431 votes

    White
    0% 0 votes
    Black
    88% 380 votes
    Middle Eastern
    1% 5 votes
    Asian
    1% 6 votes
    Latino
    0% 4 votes
    Native American
    1% 7 votes
    Mixed Race
    5% 22 votes
    Other (please specify)

Always with the interesting posts you, what are you doing in AH :P

If possible a white-Irish born and white-Other option would be interesting.

Why would it be locked?

We had a poll on how many men and women there are on the forum, and what religion people are on the forum, why not ethnicity? Don't see the harm, if it stirs up any racism the mods should deal with it.

I don't mean to be interesting :pac: Just sating my own curiosity is all!

I'll see if I can edit the poll..

EDIT: Nope. If there's a mod around maybe they can add it?

They aren't ethnic groups, they're races!

An ethnic group is a group of people with a common national or cultural tradition.

Well yeah, but even mentioning the word "race" around here is not bound to end well.

I know. It makes no sense to me either. Middle Eastern is what we (Canadians) call people from.. well, the "middle eastern" countries. People in Ireland (or at least in Mullingar..) call both those people and Asians (the -ese's, to be less than PC :pac:), "Asians." Which caused me endless confusion.

So it's really nothing to do with continents, just colloquialisms.

Not sure how to answer this, I have always filled in white on registration forms even though most people might say I am mixed race or asian, actually people have said I'm also Spanish and Italian looking in the past  I'm just grateful that I don't burn in the sun and already have a perfect natural tan.

I just view myself as Irish, have never got caught up in the whole ethnicity thing, for example when I see someone like Sol Campbell, Ian Wright etc.. I just see an English person or whatever nationality.

But you're mixing Arabs, Persians, Srindisteshis... basically about 1.5 billion people from a vast array of ethnicities. And there's a separate category for 'tanned people who speak Spanish' :D

I don't think I've ever filled out a form that asked for my race.

Well, again, colloquialisms-- I'm not actually talking about ethnicity but race. I don't know the actual race "title" for people of the Middle East.

I forgot Mediterranean in the poll, if that even counts.. would they be classified as white?

Same problem as me - Though i usually but either mixed or asian since im not really white.

Technically they're not races either, rather population groups with shared genetic heritage that show in phenotype(external characteristics). Even there it gets wibbly wobbly. There are black guys and gals in the US that would be more "white" than some who identify as European and vice versa.

I'm white btw :o So white Dracula looks like a tanning salon ad compared to me. Have the niall of the nine hostages gene and some northern spanish stuff so a tad primitive with it. :D

Depends on context and agenda. For example if they were moving to America they'd be called white, if they were brought up in Mexico then they're not. :pac:

It depends on how much you want to break it down, but I don't think anyone really subcategorises 'Europeans' in these things. If they did, my kids would be different races to each other but with the same parents

Some would consider them thus and that's the thing, it gets very and needlessly complex. EG a Spaniard from Barcelona going to the US might be put down as Hispanic "race", but clearly they would not be. The US and various empires of the 19th century have a lot to answer for with this confusion.

The middle east would be a right hodge podge of DNA lines as they were a crossroads for thousands of years. Broadly semite with european african and asian thrown in I'd reckon. It's only when you get to geographically isolated groups can you even begin to separate out populations. The Basques would be one such group. They've a narrower and older lineage than the rest of Spain or France. These islands would be similar. Now there's much talk of us been related to the Basques, but IMHO it's not so much that, but simply that the Basques and us are relics of the original inhabitants of Europe and were mixed in everywhere else, but stayed the same in both those areas. So today it looks like we're related. Though there is a funny one even there. Extinct Irish cave bears come from northern Spain not Britain  Mad or wha? We hardly brought them with us. Same for Irish toads IIRC.

Contrary to popular belief the Celts had feck all genetic impact in Ireland. Nearly all cultural. Nor did the danes/normans or english. The latter is hard to judge though because we are very close to the english/scots/welsh, especially in the west of Britain. The saxons didnt leave that much DNA behind in the UK either, or less than was thought.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Agreed, I don't see a problem here, in fact it will be interesting to see what ethnic demography we have in After Hours.

    We'll see how it goes.

What constitutes being 'on' boards? I 'used' boards for a while, reading threads, looking for info etc, before i registered.
Who knows how many people of varying ethnicities in Ireland and elsewhere do the same?

Also this boards isn't just an Irish board any more, lots of people from UK/US/whatnot use it too so I assume that will change the demography a bit.
