    Hi,

I've just had the horrible experience of having my PayPal account hacked and used to purchase something on ebay.

I have contacted PayPal and they are invesitgating it at the moment.

Has anyone else got any experience of this and if so, what was the outcome?

Surely such issues are taken on a case by case basis, so if somebody had a certain outcome it may not apply to you.

It depends on your definition of "hacked".

If someone stole your password and logged in, that is not "hacking" and you may not be reimbursed.

If your account was actually hacked, and you can prove this (for example the IP address used to make the purchase does not match your regular IP address) then you will be fine.

Fraud happens all the time. If Paypal cannot resolve the issue, go to your credit card provider. If the money didn't come from a credit card, you'll just have to hope Paypal can resolve the issue.

Paypal notified me last week of a possible unauthorised transaction on my account. There was a transaction (only a small amount) on Sept 14th which I hadn't authorised and I then reported it. Got the money back within 2 days!

Password and security questions now changed though...

It was actually hacked. I haven't logged into PayPal/ebay or any site that I could have used my PayPal accont for in nearly 2 months.

Surely PayPal can get details from the seller as to where the product is to be delivered and thereby see it was fraudulent.

I have already contacted them. The funds were taken from my credit card. Had to cancel the card and when this is resolved, I will be cancelling my PayPal account too.

EDIT: Just read over the transaction details and there was no shipping address provided. Seems to me that it was a site where you pay and then download the product.

How was my account chosen out of the millions of them??

Why and why? Your card details are not viewable in the Paypal account, so that wasn't compromised. Closing your Paypal account is unnecessary, closing your credit card account completely so.

Why not? It's not like you were specifically targeted, they just fond an email, guessed the password, or had some other way of finding it, and then used the account. If you use the same password on other sites, or with your email address, or it's easy to guess, then that's how it could be found. Spyware on your computer could be responsible, as could following links in emails to scam sites.

I was advised to do this by my bank as a precautionary measure. I'm closing my paypal because I do not want this to happen again.

Over reacting much? Way over the top on both accounts. Unless Paypal's own systems were compromised, then your credit card number cannot be seen.

Fraud is a fact of life, so if you want to prevent this from ever happening again, you'd better get off the Internet, close all bank accounts and credit card accounts, and shut yourself away from the world.

    Good idea :D

Close your account if it makes you feel safter but your bank is silly for telling you to cancel the card. Personally there is no point in doing either.

Muppets in the bank that don't know what they are on about will tell you any lies just so they won't look stupid. Of course you will then find out afterwards they are wrong.

I spoke to people in two different branches about opening a dollar account years ago, both said it couldn't be done when I knew it could. Don't always believe what people tell you

My issue was all resolved and funds reapplied to my credit card late last week :D

Even though I thought it was an online download, I still got what was bought, on CD in the post yesterday. What do I do with it?
