Is there a part of boards.ie that covers insurances?

I'm tryin get a quote for my mother at the mo and the 2nd car at home. Its a 1990 3 door 1L starlet, has done 2040 miles in the 2 years between NCT's. She just uses it to go to the wood twice a day with the dogs, and to work during the ice and snow. I bought it for €180 a few years ago. Last year it was €290 for insurance, the cheapest and lowest grade we could get.

Her renwal this year is €340, thats just mad I think, the car aint worth half that!
I got on most of the online quote sites and some wouldnt even quote a car over 15 years old. the ones that would wouldnt go under €300, but quinn quoted €246.

Do ye think thats the best i'll get?

These sort of questions have been asked here alot.

The only way to get the best policy at the best price is to get out the phonebook and ring every insurance company and insurance broker in the land. Online quotes are ok for generic cover but stray away from that and they are useless.

Also you cannot negotiate on the price with a computer. ;)

You are insuring the risk, not the car.

Get to a broker and let them do the work.

How much are you expecting to pay? It doesnt matter how little the car is worth; if you run into and write off a 10 BMW or something then the insurance company is still going to end up paying out an awful lot of money, and it is that risk that they are insuring, not your car. In reality, almost any damage to your car would result in it being written off if its only worth €180, and the excess on the policy would be more than that.

Id be amazed if you did much better than €246 but definately ring around and see. Bear in mind insurance companies are starting to take issue with cars over 10 years old, and the older it is the more issue they may take with it.

But why are they taking issue? whats the problem with older cars. I know what your saying about the 10 BMW etc and accept that, I'm just looking for the cheapest possible quote and I would concider this a very low risk car, it does hardly any miles per year, 1000 a year is feck all in fairness. (its a 2nd car)

I dont know what their issue with older cars is tbh, but thats the way it seems to be going.

As for the low risk, well its reflected in the fact that youve been quoted €240 or whatever. I ask again, how much are you expecting to pay? I cant see many insurers giving any policy for much less than that on any car tbh.

Some insurance companies give additional discounts for small or limited annual mileage. You should mention this when getting a quote.

However regarding old cars, insurance companies can and do load 10+ year old cars as there safety ratings are not great by todays standards meaning the occupents are at a higher risk of serious injury or death if involved in an accidend. A 20 year old Starlet will not have SRS airbags, side impact protection, ABS brakes or any other modern safety devices.

A car of that vintage will also not have an immobiliser fitted meaning it is easy enough to start it without needing the keys. These are factors that insurance companies take into account when assessing a risk equation.

Let's see......It has ABS? How many Airbags? It has ESP? It has how many NCAP stars?

In a nutshell, an older car is a higher risk to both it's passengers and other road users, and it's insurance risk is calculated accordingly.

With a quote of €246, I wonder how much effort are you going to put in to save what will not be a large amount.

€246 is peanuts and barely covers the cost of administering the policy.

Did you tell them your mother will only be driving it in ice and snow (apart from going to the wood with the dogs)? :D

Good points. In addition, older cars are generally not serviced as often (unless they are refurbed classic cars) and tyres, brakes etc are perhaps not replaced as often as a car on the go all the time. Replacement parts are not always available so repairs and maintenance get left undone

A 1990 Starlet or any car with no immobilizer will be first pick everytime for a car thief looking for something to joyride, can be robbed in seconds.

Please don't encourage people to drive uninsured.

I'd nearly be inclined to take the renewal quote of €246 and run regardless of my age, car, ncb, or sex as I'd be seriously surprised if she'll get a better quote. I have a full ncb, a car which I admit is somewhat bigger but almost as old at this stage and do little mileage also. I'd be very well chuffed if I got a quote next or near this or under €500 for that matter. Some companies give discounts for low anual mileage but most don't. Also most if not all companies have minimum premiums of which I think €246 would be under the minimum treshold for most.
