Has anyone ever sprayed for these in an autumn reseed? I think Dursban is a commonly used spray for them.

    My questions are:
    1) What are the signs of grass been attacked by these? I've no practical experience only from what I've read on net.
    2) When to spray? ie is it after seedlings appear?
    3) Need I be too worried about them?

Seed only in since last Saturday 19Sept so just want to be prepared and armed with info and experience from other boards members... Thanks!

You can spot leatherjackets by checking leaves near ground level. If they are cut there then LJs are the problem. Iwould think it is too cold now for insect problems but am open to correction on that. Dont know about frit flies as i havent had a problem with them. I dont think there is a need to spray for them but it may depend on part of the country or previous problem with them on the farm

Hi 5live, thanks for your reply. I will keep an eye out once the grass starts to show.

We've reseeded two other times before and to be honest I knew nothing about leatherjackets or fritfly until I read a few articles lately on reseeding on the internet. Seemingly leatherjackets are the larvae of the 'daddy long legs' and can be found under scraws or clumps in the seedbed

Yes as you say, seemingly the autumn is a better time to reseed because it is cooler and insect activity not supposed to be as bad. I think both like 'scraws' and reseeds with alot of 'trash'. I am a little apprehensive for this reason as even though there isn't alot of it in my reseed, you still have a little when you do not plough.

    Fingers crossed so!
