Hi ive travelled from Cork to Dublin a few times in the last few years but not since the motorway was finished off fully.

Im just looking for ideas as to where would be the best town to divert off the beaten track for a bit of lunch.

I remeber being in Littleton ,Horse and Jockey, abbeyleix etc.. but i assume they are bypassed now.

What town along the way would people advise for convienance etc..

Urlingford was one such town, I believe, and it has its own exit on the M8.

Urlingford still has a decent selection of stuff (three petrol stations, at least two with delis, a sit down burger place in one, toilets, etc)

They're dying on their feet mind...

Cashel south exit (J9) has a Mother Hubbards and a Tesco petrol station near by

Horse & Jockey is where I usually stop; junction is right next to the town and the Horse & Jockey Hotel (you cant miss it when you come off the motorway and head towards H&J) has a good restaurant.

Its also within about 10km of being halfway between Cork and Dublin.

It'll only take about 2h15 from the Tunnel to the Redcow, any stop you make will add a significant amount of time to the journey time.

Abbeyleix has an excellent selection of hostelries and restaurants serving good food.

I agree with KC61 on Abbeyleix, lovely town with nice coffee shops a hotel and shops etc but it's a long long way off the motorway to get there, you pass through Durrow to get there which has the lovely castle in the town centre, might be a nice place to stop.

I'd recommend Horse & Jockey or Urlingford as posted above or Portlaoise is a large town with two exits from the motorway.

True - it would require using the old road from Cullahill to Portlaoise but it is worth it for the excellent selction of eateries!

Agreed (again:D) and obviously if the OP is looking for someplace to stop then they're not in a rush so it might be nice to cut off for Abbeyleix at your leisure and it also breaks some of the monotony of the motorway and avoids the toll, that's 3 wins right there.;)

Even longer now that they've closed off entry/exit to the motorway at Cullahill. You end up having to go through Abbeyleix, Durrow, Cullahill and Johnstown. It's an awful pity they couldn't stick a permanent junction there. Abbeyleix is a lovely town and I'd detour if it didn't mean not being able to get back on the motorway until Urlingford.
