I'm getting married late next year and am having a smallish wedding (around 80 people). I'm trying to decide if having a band and a DJ is overkill for a wedding of this size and should i just have one or the other.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Probably overkill for a small wedding to have both. Will that be 80 including the people who are coming for the afters? It probably depends on a few things. If the meal is over, and band/DJ ready to go by 8, it would be a very long night of just one or the other until 2.30 am. However, if you see the meal being finished at 9.30pm, with band or DJ starting at 10, and the night wrapping up at 1am, then you'd be fine.

I think bands at weddings are generally better than DJs to be honest, but usually more pricy. If you go with just DJ, make sure he's a good one who is used to entertaining wedding crowds. Someone just knocking out the hits for 4 hours will get a bit boring.

We'd 180 Including people for afters at ours and had band with one of the members doing DJ afterwards. This worked well with the cost around 1,800 as far as I remember. But then, it's one of the things that I do believe can make or break a wedding, and myself, family and friends are very into music.

Cheetara we're having 72 at our wedding, no afters people and we're just going with the band. Having some acoustic playing during our afternoon tea time but a band later on that night from about 9.30-10pm. We'll be finishing up about 1 so our band said they'd cover it, no need for a dj after that.

I would go with a band imo, people are alot more inclined to dance with a band rather than a dj... but then we love live music so we might be biased. Either way I think having just one would suffice for your day.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The maximum number of guests would be 90 and the more I think about the more i think the band is the better option.

You are right when you say people would be more inclined to dance if there was a band playing. Think i'd better work out a rough timeline for the day so that there isn't a huge gap between meal and music!!!!!
