I was wondering if any could offer me some advice please. I have been working from a family members new laptop (one month old – Windows 7) and keep this morning the Windows System Shield flashed up to say that a load of various threats (24 in total, Trojans and others) had been found. When I click on the “Remove All” another box pops up looking to sell me anti virus protection. McAfee is on the laptop and found nothing. Just to double check I installed Avast and Spybot Search and Destroy but found nothing. Is this just a way of Windows selling more products or are the other products I have installed not suitable?

It's a virus. Read the Security Tool thread that's also in this forum.

Basically try and install, update and run malwarebytes. If the virus won't let you do that then download rkill on another pc , change it's name to iexplorer.exe or file.exe and then put it on disk and transfer it to the laptop that's infected. Then run it as soon as the laptop boots up. It'll stop the virus running and you can run and download more removal tools then.

It sounds like a classic virus whereby a program warns you about various non-existent infections and pushes you to hand over money for nothing.

The exact term Windows System Shield though doesn't thrown up anything really obvious in Google. Follow the generic instructions here and see if they come up with anything.

Oh and make sure that you or your relatives do not buy the AV they're linking to. If you have done that cancel your credit card immediately.

Cheers for the advice Whimsical and bhickey. It worked great. All cleaned up and no harm done.
