Have we got anyone in this country who could do something similar?
We have that much commercial property all over the place surely we could tempt him to manufacture here or maybe there is a bright spark or two who could do something similar?

Gary Anderson comes to mind, he was a brilliant F1 designer back in the '90s.
Himself and Eddie Jordan came up with some very innovative designs back in the day.
He was from Belfast I think

These will probably be manufactured in a low cost country with an existing manufacturing base e.g Central/Eastern Europe, India, Brazil, China etc. In other words: not us!

Related to the topic: I wonder did we ever try to develop a tractor manufacturing industry here? You would think it would be a logical starting point for a largely agricultural, newly independent country, trying to develop a manufacturing base. Tractors are much simpler to build than cars and there would have been a large home market; I think at one point Ireland had the highest tractor ownership per capita in Europe.

Harry Ferguson from Massey-Ferguson was from Belfast but that never translated into large scale tractor manufacturing.

If they are simpler to make it would just increase competition rather than give an advantage.

We do have a farm machinery export sector though:

Farm machinery firms in French sales drive
    Monday, 13 September 2010 11:22
11 Irish farm machinery firms are heading to France for a major sales drive, organised by Enterprise Ireland.

The companies will exhibit their machinery in Rennes at France's livestock and agricultural equipment trade show, SPACE.

The 11 companies have a turnover of over €250m and exports account for over 60% of sales, including €23m to France.

AdvertisementThe Minister for Trade and Commerce, Billy Kelleher, is travelling to France with the trade delegation and is due to meet the Secretary of State for External Trade to discuss strengthening bilateral trade between France and Ireland. He will also meet the President of the Regional Council of Brittany to discuss Breton-Irish links.

France is the third largest export market for Enterprise Ireland firms. Last year total exports to France from about 500 Irish firms totalled €593m.
