Wood pellet boiler vs log boiler

I am at the moment weighing up my options on which to install in a new build, I always thought i would go for the wood pellet but after much research on them i am very much put off them nearly...I now know of 4 people who have had them installed and wish they had'nt now, if its not breaking down and needing new parts the pellets are jammed in it or have got damp and the list goes on...

Which led to some further research into another option the log gasification burner. Does anyone have one or hear what they are like, I no they are very expensive but if they are better that the wood pellet boiler they might be worth it...

I really dont want to go down the oil boiler option and be at ransom to inflated oil prices in years to come!

oil and pellet prices will always be reletive, i have been heard of a irish boiler maker launching a pellet boiler early next year, and they have a solid reputation with plumbers, but i think the whole wood pellet scene may be related to the celtic tiger, a popular memory from the past when money was burned at the same rate as the little sawdust nuggets!

might be worth you reading this, the main difference between the two is that that the pellet boiler is automatic where as the log boiler is not. The log boiler has to be lit every day in the winter but if you are prepared to do that i personally think its a better option. There is a thread on here with all the horror stories related to pellet boilers.

    hope this helps

I don't know muc about the difference between pellet/wood boilers but I do that wood pellet prices have been the same for the last two years. Best option, if going with pellet, is to get a silo. a ton of bagged pellet is about €295 where as a ton of loose pellet is about €210. The silo's can be expensive though. From the retailer your looking at €1800 plus vat, but I spoke to someone recently who bought one for €1800 including vat. Allot of space required either way. The cheapest I have seen oil (kerosene) in the last two years is 38 cent p/l, but Ive seen it go to 88 cent p/l. When oil is cheap it's allot better value, but when it's dear pellet is the way to go. I also have heard of people having problems with pellet boilers. I don't know if this is a specific manufactor problem or what. Just a bit of advice...
