    Wonder if there's any potential for this a/c as a commercial passenger carrier?!

    Would be a far sight cooler to rock up to your Maldivian beach villa in one of these bad boys instead of a twin otter.:D

    Beriev have a long tradition of seaplane making.

    A42 is currently in production for the Russian Navy as an ASW and SAR bird.

    SAR in particular makes sense, they can actually pick up people.

    Yeah but the problem with rescuing people from the water is you need to have calm sea conditions.

    It could do well as a medium haul air taxi service to small islands. Would be nice to see one landing in Foynes.

    True, but that didn't stop the PBY Catalinas from rescuing plenty of people. Not all rescues happen in atrocious weather. Medical emergencies come to mind, as do collisions or other non-weather-related occurrences. A single PBY rescued 54 personnel after the sinking of USS Indianapolis, I'd like to see any helicopter try that.

    When the Albatrosses were retired, USCG lost a very specific capability.

    Calm water landing capability does not detract very much compared to the the abilities of the current SAR fixed-wing fleet to do the top-cover / Long-range search functions, but does allow more options. If the weather is good, rescue can get there faster, and unless your helicopters have in-flight-refuelling (Do any other than the US ones?) it may not even get there. If the weather is poor, you're no worse off.
