Have a 00 Focus which is misfiring, was told that it's either the coil needs replacing or less likely a piston ring.My question is how long can I drive this car without irrepairably damaging the engine?

An engine mis-firing can be down to the spark plugs, have you changed them...?

If its the coil, just replace it. It'll cost 80 quid fitted. If it is the coil and you dont replace it, it wont be long about ruining the cat, which will cost a lot more.

As Midnight said, check the plugs too because it could easily be them!

Coil failure on the Focus is common enough.
