Best option for new tv connection

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice and am pretty clueless I'm afraid.

I currently don't have a tv connection and am looking at getting one. I just want a basic package with the usual Irish/UK channels etc.

I called UPC who gave me a quote and said they'd have to run a cable in (fine) but I have been put off a bit by horror stories about their coverage.

Just wondering what are the other options out there. I definitely don't want to put a satellite dish on the roof. If I could avoid having to run in a cable that would be great but I presume that I'll need one or the other (cable or dish)? Can I get a cable connection without paying a contract with UPC - i.e. just get it wired in then hook it up to a digital box? Can I get Irish channels this way?

Thanks - any suggestions appreciated. Obviously the cheaper the better!

EDIT - I am genuinely not sure whether above (digital box connected to cable) may be illegal but just to clarify I am looking for legit options! Thanks

If you dont want a dish, your alternatives are a terrestial arial that will give you the Irish terrestials and, maybe, depending on your location, the UK freeview ones as well. or a digital arial from UPC which will give a digital quality picture. There are some complainers about UPC here but the vast majority of UPC's customers are a satisfied lot, otherwise UPC would be long gone out business and that dosen't appear likely to happen anytime soon. Have a good read of the threads on this forum, and you should then have a fair idea of what you should get.

If you dont want a dish then the only choice you have at present is UPC.

Can I ask your objections to putting up a dish? It would greatly open up your options.

    Hey lanners

    Just spotted this thread.

You should not fear connecting with UPC, we are the largest cable provider in Europe (and one of the largest in the world)

We offer all the essential digital channels, starting at €22.75 per month, (93 channels) we will give you SKY Sports & Movies free for 2 months, and furthermore, as a boards user you wil also get a voucher for €50 if you sign up via this link www.upc.ie/boardsoffer

Any questions please call my team on 1890940635 and they will advise you.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Jason

Jason does that Boards offer cover existing customers adding new products to their package or only new customers?

UPC haven't gone out of business but ComReg's own statistics show that they lost a very substantial number of MMDS customers back when Chorus ran it, as it was an inferior service to Sky in every respect. If Chorus had just ran MMDS, they probably would have become broke by now.

Btw if you have to get MMDS off UPC (you only get the digital+ options in Co. Dublin, Galway and Waterford generally) there'll be a reasonably-sized mesh aerial installed on a pole at roof level. If you're in an urban cabled area then it will be a tidy job to have cable installed. A sky dish would look better than an MMDS aerial in my opinion. UPC's cabled services often allow broadband and phone deals too, MMDS doesn't.

Erm...not sure really. I just don't like the idea of it. To be honest i don't really want to get a tv connection at all and have lived happily without one for years but circumstances dictate it at the moment and I just want to do it as unobtrusively as possible. So I'd feel the same about an aerial on the roof, not really into the idea.

OK so it's looking like ups cable service then. A package including broadband might be worth looking into. Jason, I presume the free installation includes actually bringing the wire in, (Sorry I really am clueless) - it's an old house but i don't know if it's ever had a cable connection. Would drilling the wire in affect insulation in the walls or anything like that?

I'm in Dublin city centre if that makes any difference to my options.

If your are a tv customer and subscribe to Broadband or phone via this offer you will indeed qualify.(an upgrade to an existing product does not)

    Lanners

In Dublin you will get a full digital plus service (a box that can pause, record, series link etc) - starting at just €22.75 per month

We will look after all the cabling as part of your installation.(activation charges are waived with this boards offer)

If you order via the boards link, when my team call you, ask about broadband and phone too, if available in your home you can make significant savings compared to Sky/eircom, when you take the 3 services from us (our most popular bundle, Fibre Sport saves €530 a year). Also ask them to apply free Sky sports & movies for 2 months)

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

    Regards

    Jason

If you don't like dishes etc then you should be sorted with UPC in Dublin city centre. Useful info there from Jason - but UPC need to pull the finger out and roll out broadband everywhere between the Royal and Grand canals!:pac:
