starting college on monday under the back to education allowance. Did a check and was told i can work as many hours as i like so long as it does not affect my course work. Ive been offered a part time job at the weekend between 6-9 hours. I called the tax office and they told me i would not be liable for tax because i am well under the threshold but i have to fill out a TR1 form. If i fill out this form i am now classed as self imployed and i need to be unemployed to receive btea for college..........btw..its delivery work and cash in hand thats why i contacted the tax office.

I think it would be a good idea if you were to decide not to take the job ... if you get my drift.

Look for another job instead: one that's not cash-in-hand.

    Or perhaps just don't work.

As you say, being self-employed will have consequences for you, both now and in terms of welfare eligibility after you leave college.

A TR1 is a self employment form. That means the job is not employment and not an insured(prsi) employment.

JUst because your income is under the tax threshold does not mean you are exempt from PRSI.

Any additional benefits, other than the BTEA, rent allowance would be affected but not the BTEA from other earnings.

During the summer etc your BTEA is not paid but you go back on unemployment assistance.

In other words the guy is asking you to work outside the system ;);)
