Im sure the EU has said he cant own a majority sharehold , as it would be a virtual monopoly in this country then

Good. About time they raised some cash. A government has no business running an airline in this day and age

a)The rules are there to prevent a monopoly. Ryanair buying aer lingus woudl be a bad thing as they would have no major competitor in the irish market
    b) there is no european government
    c) if europe were actually controlling our country we oudl not be in the financial **** we are now
    d) european aid and support is part of why we had a boom in the first place

Yeah, damn the EU with trying to protect the consumer. We should just let Ryanair take over Aer Lingus so they can have a monopoly. That way they'll able to charge whatever they like because we'll have no other option but to fly with them as there won't be any other alternative. Shame on the EU.

As for Aer Lingus being "****". I for one always enjoy flying with them and will always opt to fly with them over Ryanair if it's cheaper or not too much more expensive to do so. The extra price you pay in transport for landing miles and miles away from your actual destination, plus the satisfaction of flying with an airline that treats you well is most definitely worth it.

Competition is always a good thing, monopolies are always a bad thing. Fact.

    I don't care, i'd rather spend 1p on a 10 minute flight on £150 on a 10 minute flight such a waste of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭nag

What part of "cheaper or not too much more expensive to do so" didn't you understand?

And btw, sometimes it IS worth spending that extra money to get exactly where it is you want to go at a specific time and in comfort. It's all about perspective. Nothing is ever black and white.

Not if the flight is 1p versus £150 and is only an hour for god sake, i could probably stick the ryanair seats for 3 hours. So your telling me that you would waste £150 flying a 10 minutes flight to glasgow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭nag

If by going to Glasgow it meant flying to an airport that was miles and miles outside of Glasgow in the middle of nowhere with no transport links and landing in the middle of the night, then yes, I might pay it. If it meant flying direct to Glasgow Airport, then no.

I think this has gone far enough OT.

I see what you mean but most airports that ryanair use do have transports like prestwick has a 20 minute train ride to glasgey.

It was the Irish government who brought a case against Ryanair to the European Commission on competition grounds.

Also there is no European government, just as there is no European state. There is a council of ministers representing all 27 EU states who bring in directives and regulations for all of the binding member states, which are then ratified by the european parliament. Then theres the european commission which controls the unions budget and oversees the implementation of the treaties and these directives and regulations, and imposes penalties on those member states which don't abide by them. And you don't pay any taxes to Europe, your government makes an annual contribution which varies from country to country.

I'd take that article with a pinch of salt. I really can't see Aer Lingus merging with BA, Willie Walsh has already said he wouldn't buy into the airline with the current shareholder structure, particularly with Ryanair having a stake. Also the only thing BA will have their eye on is Aer Lingus' Heathrow slots, and they would just see the merger as a chance to copperfasten their codeshare agreement with Aer Lingus and secure the connecting traffic they get from Ireland, which represents around 10% of their long-haul revenue. Christoph Mueller made a point of highlighting the Lufthansa takeover of Brussels Airlines in the Aviation Week article for a reason, so I'd put my money on a Lufthansa deal and them joining Star Alliance over One World/BA.

This is off-topic but anyways. Exactly, Ireland should have been able to decide themselves, but who decided? Europe!!!

Your second argument is not convincing.

Last time i checked this was the Aviation and Aircraft section, I don't see why some people are bashing the EU in this thread and spreading inaccurate information.

Firstly if people actually read the link to the Irish Independent they would see that the government share is only worth 25% of EI. Ryanair own's over 28% of EI. Even if BA-IB or LH buy the government stake it still will not be the majority shareholder unless they can buy-out other minority shareholders such as the pilots and liam carroll etc...

Secondly, in my personal opinion EI is more likely to just join a Global alliance such as OW, skyteam, SA rather than sell the company. EI really need to be part of a larger group as they need to be ble to offer their passengers stronger connections, so the do not necessarly need to become part of a larger arline group to achieve this.

IF they were to put the airline up for sale then i would imagine LH would be interested in them. EI is the 5th largest carrier at LHR and LH REALLY want more slots. If they were to buy EI we would see EI loose vital slots at LHR which would be a bad thine for business passengers doing business in london/dublin.

the EU has done wonders for aviation( open skies!) and we should not be bashing them.

    RANT OVER.

I wasn't trying to convince you of anything, I was just stating fact.

And again, Europe didn't force anything on us, we asked them to make a ruling on the issue.

You make it sound as if the whole nation was supporting the takeover, and Europe spoilt the whole thing. Do you realise how bad a Ryanair takeover of Aer Lingus would be? We'd go full circle from having a public monopoly up to the 1980s to having a private one now instead. Fares would inevitably go up, routes would be consolidated, jobs would be lost, and above all there'd be less choice with a Ryanair-Aer Lingus airline group having a 70% share of the Irish market.

Germany is actually the biggest financial supporter of the EU, they pay more in to the EU than any other country.

Ireland is a very small country and our membership of the EU (as well as very low corporation tax rates) is why so many US multinationals have setup their European bases here.

As for Ryanair being allowed to operate a monoploty from Ireland, it would not be good for either Ireland or for the other EU countries that it operates in, as it would lead to serious price increases and a reduction in the overall services provided between Ireland and other EU countries.

England has a very strong economy, however, other parts of the UK do not have such strong economies, in fact, the state is the largest single empolyer in certain parts of the UK

Even if we did make the decision, Ryanair would've appealed it in the European Court of Justice. Not just that but any takeover of Aer Lingus by Ryanair wouldn't just effect Ireland, but other EU member states as well, so the European Commission has a role in deciding whether the takeover would meet or breach competition rules.

A company doesn't have to be state-owned for a takeover to breach competition rules, thats why we have a competition authority.

were rather off topic I realise , but I worked in Prestwick and unless they have installed a TGV or bullet train ,then it takes a hell of alot longer then 20 mins to get from PIK to Glasgow central station....try 45 mins .
Also the trains run only every 30 mins and the last train (used to anyway ) leaves before midnight .

It takes shorter i've done it my sister lives in dundee i think she should know. Your not even from scotland anyway. And it only takes 20 minutes to drive there as your on motorway the whole way nearly.

I'm talking about canada, australia etc... uk's population will likely overtake france's in like a couple of years and theres more like 70 million in the uk as theres loads of illegals.. so every country has that the uk has one of the best economies in the world so stop running it down , it seems that when you say something good about the uk the irish always run it down with jealousy!:P nvm about that part, can they use 29% of the planes then to take us to america?

Alas that famous 1 billion is but a distant memory - it has been eaten by years of losses and it now not much more than 3-400 million - a fair bit alright but the cash burn rate at Aer Lingus will see this gone in a couple of years.
